BMPC4K Best Livestream Settings

PostTue Jun 28, 2022 3:21 am

We are using our BCMC4k in a live stream church setup. Curious, what settings would produce the best HDMI video?

Thanks!

I normally use 3840 x 2160 at 59.94 fps.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

4 important factors to consider before determining livestream settings:

1. Output device resolution - what will majority of your viewers be using to watch? 1080p computer monitors?

2. Your internet speed which will be used to send program out to viewers via internet - if slow to medium you don't want to risk stream feed issues with too much data especially if most viewers are using 1080p monitors to watch

3. Livestream device? ATEM's are 1080p output

4. Highest resolution of host venue such as YouTube and Facebook

Most likely you want to put out a 1080p 23.97-30 fps show

Why not 30fps?

Right, but what settings on the camera itself bring the best quality? Guessing 4k resolution on it? What else though?

If it's live and you're not recording in camera there's no point in setting the camera to 4K as the HDMI output on the pocket cameras is 1080p only.

Not sure if it helps the focus assist, maybe. Depends on if the focus assist works before or after the downscale.

But do I even want to use Focus assist?

How about detailed sharpening, and which dynamic range? Video?

Of course you don't want focus assist on the HDMI output, but you can use it on the camera LCD if you need it.

Since it's live, add sharpening if you feel it's needed but you'll likely be fine without it. If you won't be using a LUT on the HDMI output then Video Dynamic Range makes sense.

Frequently we're also showing the output on a screen in the room as well as streaming. That screen gets 1080p/59.94.

Plus, I've always found 30 kinda...useless.

I'm either filming at 24 or projecting/streaming at 59.94.

Yes, but the 1080 option is cropped. 2160 is not.

I find the latter to be...sharper.

the 1080 HDMI out is not cropped or windowed.
and if you record in camera, there will always record at the highest resolution in BRAW.

1080p on the pocket cameras is only cropped if you set it to a windowed sensor format. With ProRes you can choose to have it cropped or not and since this is live there's no point in using Blackmagic Raw.

Of course, there's no harm in setting the format to 4K, but I thought it might give the OP the impression that he would get a 4K image which isn't true.
