7.9 and OIS

PostThu Jun 30, 2022 4:58 pm

So there's no Status display for OIS in the new 7.9 update? We have to go into the menu to see if it's on or off?

I notice that it has to be on for the lens OIS to work. Can't just flip the switch on the lens.

Does it have to be off for Gyro to work, even if the OIS switch is off?

What if a lens doesn't have OIS? Does the camera settings still need to be off for Gyro to work?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

only the 4k has this switch in the menu for MFT OIS lenses.
and here it must be off (and on the lens) to write gyro data in BRAW metadata.
and there are also no gyro data in a prores file.

7.9 and OIS

Probably true but for my manual BMPCC4K system, the greyed toggle is On. I fear this will prevent the gyro data being included in my BRAW, but I guess I can’t confirm that until I go to release 18. Won’t do that until I finish my current 10 hour project.

When testing this with my 4K and Lumix 12-35, I noticed that only the menu setting mattered. I could still enable OIS on the lens (and get a messed up gyro stabilization as a result).

From my experiments on the PCC4K, it seems that the 'Image Stabilisation' switch in the Setup menu appears to be toggled 'On' by default, but is actually greyed out and inactive until a suitable Panasonic lens is attached. At which point it lights up and can be turned on and off.

However, all my manual and electronic lenses (none of which are Panasonic) are passing the gyro data through to Resolve 18 despite the somewhat-confusing appearance of the switch. In fact, my Olympus OIS 12-100 still allows the camera to supply gyro data to Resolve even when the OIS switch on the lens itself is on!

So it seems that the decision-making process in the camera when to shut off the gyro data depends on the extent to which a lens can communicate its OIS metadata to the camera and is somewhat variable across different manufacturers. But it seems to pass the data through by default, which is good news.

My observation is that the OIS toggle switch is menu is only applicable to lenses that do not have a physical switch. For lenses that have a physical switch, it is controlled by the physical switch only. The toggle in the setup menu will remain greyed out.

PS: interesting: for Panasonic/Leica 12-60 lens, it records Gyro data regardless whether the physical OIS switch is on or not.

Hello, I have BMPCC6K two lenses Sigma 17-55/f2.8 OIS and 18-35 f1.8. Gyro does not work even when OIS is turned off. It only works on the unstabilized lens 18-35.
