Recommended ssd for editing BRAW on Mac Studio

PostThu Jul 07, 2022 11:23 am

Just got the Mac Studio Ultra (base module) with 1tb ssd space

From your experience, which drive is GOOD ENOUGH for editing 6K BRAW footage in davinci on a 4k timeline?
I don't want to do any transcoding.

1) Sabrent 2TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal SSD
or
2) Samsung T7 Portable SSD - 2 TB

I know for sure option 1 is faster, but do i really need that for easy playback of footage on the timeline or is option two good enough for that?

I’d go with the something you can grow with, the Nvme can go into a raid array in an external enclosure or add redundancy.

I’ve been using 2x Crucial MX500 2TB in a raid 1 configuration as my project edit drive. Playback in 4K with 6K BRAW 3:1 is working well.

OWC makes decent external enclosures.

I use the Samsung T5 / T7 as field drives to copy cfast cards to with an m1 MacBook and I find they drop off speed and sometimes eject themselves during cloning.

Don't touch Sabrent, their after-sales service is awful.
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Acasis enclosure with a Samsung 980 Pro NVMe inside. Its biggest advantage (aside from speed) is the double use over Thunderbolt and USB-C, depending on the computer connected. Regarding Samsung T5 or T7, your experience may come from bad cables, I had to throw one away too, but with my current cables they work flawlessly. Please keep in mind that the T7 won't work with a BM camera, though.

In my experience, you don't need ultra fast SSDs for straightforward editing and rendering of BRAW (same with ProRes Raw in Final Cut). I'm using a fast 2021 14" MacBook Pro Max which is similar to but probably a little slower than your Studio Ultra. I am using external portable 520MB/S G-Tech drives for my media and they are just as fast as using the ultra fast 1TB internal drive.

I downloaded some 6K BRAW video downloaded the Blackmagic website. A straightforward BRAW 6K timeline rendered out to 28GB ProRes4444XQ in 45s to the internal and external drives - no difference. I suspect CPU/GPU speeds (don't know which) are much more significant than drive speed here (presumably there is a lower limit but I've not hit that yet with these SSDs.

Second that. Ordinary SSDs are enough for BRAW.
The NVMe I mentioned can even handle 6.5K ArriRAW uncompressed – if you should ever need that.
(30+ MB per frame)
