1TB SD cards for 4K ProRes?

PostMon Aug 01, 2022 10:35 pm

I notice the approved media list doesn't include any 1TB cards. Does anyone know if it's possible? I'll be shooting 4K ProRes (422, not HQ).

1TB SD cards for 4K ProRes?

The 512GB SDXC card may be the largest available from Wise.

I know the OP is asking about SD cards. The smaller the card and the higher the capacity and r/w speeds the denser the media becomes which can be prone to issues including failure. That may be why it’s hard to find a 1TB SD card. I recommend either a CFast card or for a lower budget get a SSD like the Delkin Juggler. For 4K Prores 422, they’re plenty fast.

1TB SD cards for 4K ProRes?

PostTue Aug 02, 2022 1:59 pm

Here’s more information on the new certified V90 class 512 GB SDXC cards from Wise Advanced; I’ll look into these further in the future to see if they can handle hot conditions:

https://www.wise-advanced.com.tw/news/n ... 3CFCBE1110

My Wise 128 GB SDXC UHS-II has been relegated to the MixPre-6 II since it has recorded several mics all day for that recent music festival without any capacity concerns. If ever it died, I always carry the standard Sound Devices 32 GB card as insurance.

I rely on three CFast2 cards, but I’ve noticed during our week-long heatwave I was having some limitations for off-speed HFR recording on the BMPCC4K. I wish I had thought to try the SDXC card to see how it handled the heat. Next heatwave.

However the Wise 1TB Portable SSD had no problems during the heatwave so I can recommend it with confidence. It’s not the cheapest drive though. Wise does have new CFExpress cards that go up to 1 TB; just waiting for BMD to include that media

Thanks guys, does anyone know exactly what card speed (V60, V90 etc) is needed for 4K ProRes? Or what mbps?

I have CFast cards as well, but looking specifically for something at a high capacity as there won't be a DIT on this shoot and I'd like to just stick to one card a day.

4k Prores HQ is 118MB/sec, but it's not just a question of card write speed. Some cards may not work at all in the camera, others will drop frames well below their claimed write speeds (which are all advertised as "up to", not actual). The only way to know is test.

1TB SD cards for 4K ProRes?

PostTue Aug 02, 2022 4:35 pm

The Angelbird V90 512GB card quotes a 300 MB/s datarate presumably for reading the card. The Wise V90 512GB card quotes 290 MB/s read and 260 MB/s write datarates.

I’ve asked my contact at Wise-Advanced for more details about maximum sustained writes and their testing results. I would think the sustained writes would exceed the V90 class but be short of the quoted write speed that likely isn’t sustainable.

Edit
Wise has not begun working on the SD Express cards yet as they are waiting until that is picked up more broadly.

I still don’t get the appeal for a fast write speed high capacity SD card if the camera can take CFAST or SSD at much better write speed and capacity. The cost difference is almost negligible and I would be more comfortable using a CFAST or SSD than a SD card. Just IMO.

One appeal for someone who prefers the SDXC UHS-II cards may be that their computer has a compatible card slot, apparently like a new MacBook Pro. Or they may have other devices that only support the more ubiquitous SDXC cards. So it may be a question of convenience. Personally though an external high speed SSD with USB-C is better.

I would also prefer CFast, but if a V60 SD card will cut it, there's definitely a big price gap. The Angelbird model that Tim mentions is $299, compared to $699 for the CFast. You're right that the difference is less for comparable speeds, but in this case I don't think I need comparable speeds.

Re: SSDs, I've always been a little wary of having the media outside the camera. I had a friend whose USB-C port got permanently busted when a PA bumped into the camera. Obviously we all try to take care of our cameras and hope such a thing would never happen to us, but on film sets, accidents happen.

The card I illustrated is the V90 512GB. Angelbird now offers V60 1TB, but I don’t know BMD Disk Speed test results.

Just for fun, I picked up a cheap V30 1TB Lexar card from a local store. Claimed write speed 70 MB/s.

Recorded a 15-min clip of ProRes 422 4K DCI. No issues.

If the Lear card consistently delivers sustained write speed of 70 MB/s, then yes you should have no issues recording at ProRes 422 4K DCI @ 24fps. Based on Robert’s data rate calc sheet, at that setting, the BMPCC 6K Pro writes out at approximately 64 MB/s.

Here’s the calc sheet for your reference. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=118151&p=754354&hilit=Robert+spreadsheet#p754354

CFAST is significantly more expensive. SSD is an external solution, adding failure points and often additional weight to help mitigate those.

Jim, very dense cards especially in SD cards that over 256Gb are highly susceptible to failures, possibly slightly higher or equal to SSD failure points anyway, being that SSD at those capacities are cheaper when price is in question. A 1TB SD card is not cheap. CFast cards are not significantly expensive when you compute per Gigabyte cost and gives you a lot less failure rate. That’s my 2 cents anyway.

1TB SDXC card ~ $499, 1 TB CFast card ~ $699, 1TB Samsung T5 ~ $109

As a side note, I don’t use high capacity cards when I shoot production material. I use 256gb CFast cards and if I need a terabyte for the day shoot, I will bring 4 or 5 256s and have the DIT offload it and duplicated as each gets filled up. Just my SOP.

And the Wise Portable 1 TB SSD is currently $279. So a big difference than the once ubiquitous T5. However given the higher incidence of problems with the T5 for some, I’m still preferring Wise that hasn’t failed me… yet. Considering the lesson learned during our last heat wave, it’s more reliable now than my CFast2 cards. Everyone relies on their own experience.

Not used a Cfast personally. But the 1Tb Wise SSDs have been functioning perfectly for me (BMPCC4K) whether long shots at full res in direct sun or studio.

One does worry about the external connections but it's short and close and mounted solid to the cage. No issues so far.

But I'm not doing run & gun grab & go work either.

You can pre-order the Angelbird V60 1Tb SD card for $299 now. That will get you to shoot 4K DCI Prores 422 with no fear. They’re shipping end of this month.

That’s a V30 SD cards. I guess they’re coming down in price. The Angelbird SD cards are V60 rated.
