Sony FX6 RAW into Video Assist 12G HDR

PostSun Oct 02, 2022 11:47 pm

Is there any issue with the Video Assist 12G HDR recording the RAW signal from the Sony FX6 to BRAW?

Well that would be an issue, wouldn't? :D
Why doesn't it?
What keeps it from working as a recorder for the Sony FX6?

Recording braw mean some data of sensor and color science should be shared with Blackmagic Design to profile sensor to manage braw compression. It’s only matter of who do according with who. Sony develop sensors and sell to many brand included Blackmagic Design, why not ?
Canon, Panasonic, Fuji just did it.

Seems to be about business politics, not about technology.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

No BRAW option for Sony cameras, no ProRes Raw for Resolve. Lots of business politics and zero technology issues.

There is currently no raw transmission standard, nor were HDMI and SDI originally designed to be raw data transport streams. To send 12 or 16 bit data down traditionally 10 bit lines utilizes packing/unpacking schemes to encode/decode information. Each manufacturer has their own system of encoding data to fit within the pipe. Here's an example of how Blackmagic is able to encode 12 bit linear raw and utilize it within 10 bit 4:2:2 infrastructure. Without this information (and other) Blackmagic would need to reverse engineer raw output coming from the FX6.

Good Luck

Ok... I guess I'll have to go with the Atomos Shogun 7 as my second choice. I was really hoping to be able to use BRAW for Resolve. But I guess ProRes Raw will have to do.

Having the same "problem". Would love to use BRAW & the VA12g.

The Atomos Ninja V+ kit will record 4K 120 RAW
Not BRAW, but…

Thanks, I know. Want to use more Resolve in the future though and that's not possible with Apple RAW. Plus, the 7" VA is cheaper than the 5" Atomos.

SDI, even 12G, is not able to transmit the full scope of Braw, especially from the 12K, at low compression and HFR. That packing refers to UHD only and is a form of recompression. This is why the Ursas don't have raw output to the VA. HDMI 2.0 and 2.1+, I think has a higher capability bandwidth, so the restriction is political and not technical, necessarily. However the Pockets don't record Braw out either.

I'm nonetheless going to buy the 7" HDR VA, since it's dual use for me follows my policy of buying gear - Because of space restrictions in my edit suite I cannot fit a 4K Duoscope, for scopes and it is quite a useful on set client monitor too. Plus it has backup codedcs such as DNxHR. It's price is significantly more value than SmallHDs too and their scopes are useless for post.

I haven’t used the scopes on other 5” or 7” monitors, but the scopes are one of the best features on the BMVA12G7. So much detail.
