BMD Studio Camera 4K Pro: MFT Lens max weight?

PostThu Oct 06, 2022 4:56 pm

Hi, I’ve just received the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 40-150mm 1:2.8 PRO Lens and I’m surprised because it’s heavy (880g). Now I’m unsure if I can just mount on MFT or is it too heavy? The lens has own Tripod mount but the camera is not lighter.

Well what now? Do you know the official max weight limit for MFT?

Best regards

I would be more comfortable using lens support than just hanging it off the camera indefinitely.

How could I do that? I know the mountolate has two rod holes but where do I find suitable parts? (Preferable Smallrig?) Any hints?

Maybe this?

The diameter of the rods should be 15mm am I right? (I’m not at studio in next days).

Yes, the holes are for 15mm rods. Something like that should work fine, but rigging is not my specialty by any means. Smallrig sells a bunch of supports that have a generic curve shape to support any lens, not just a screw on mount point.

Hi Jack. Thank you for your reply.

I’m also not a rigging expert yet. That is why I asked.

I saw them. I’d prefer the screw solution. :) I ordered the parts and will let you know the result.

So nobody knows the specs about MFT mount in regard to max lens weight?

I believe this was discussed years ago without any general conclusion. It’s going to vary with different cameras and possibly could even vary with different lenses depending upon the materials’ rigidity. I think anything about 2 pounds and up would benefit with support. But some would say you can exceed that safely.

I generally use lens mounts without giving it much thought since I almost always shoot with a rig and a tripod.
