IR Filter alternatives for bmpcc 4k

PostFri Oct 21, 2022 4:22 pm

Hey guys,

I need a new IR filter for my pocket 4k because it has scratches and fungus. Blackmagic sells that piece for $150 or so, but there are cheaper options like the ones on the link. Do you guys have tried?

Worth taking this opportunity to upgrade to a RawLite filter for better IR control and elimination of moiré.

I asked about purchasing it (Australia) by contacting support via email and they said I couldn't. I would need to send the camera in for it to be changed over. It was about AUD$400. So I'm thinking about it vs Rawlite which would cost about AUD$600.

And you can change it on your own. I did it for mine (UMP 4.6K).

The P4K has a built-in IR filter?

If so, it doesn't work very well. I use these, and they work great.

All BMD cameras have IR filters that are quite mild.

You can of course use something more aggressive.

But be aware that you can cut too much into visible as well.

I think RAWLITE have the balance just right.

Actually, all camera manufacturers are careful not to filter IR too much. It's very critical to get that right, and it's not only about eating into deep reds. Even Leica was criticised for green corners with one model and specific lenses. The shorter flange distances of mirrorless cameras make it quite difficult with some lenses.

IMHO, RAWlite is the best you can find.
