Problems with SAMSUNG T7

PostSat Nov 26, 2022 12:53 am

New User. Please forgive and guide me if I am doing this wrong.

I have two new BMCC 6K Pro cameras with a new SAMSUNG T-7 1TB SSD. I connected the drive to what I will call the "A" camera and formatted it exFFAT there. Both cameras are set up to record BRAW, Constant Quality, Q0, 4K DCI. Both cameras are set up to give warnings if frames are missed but keep recording.

Three things happened when I used this setup the first time. I am trying to understand why and what to do about all three:

1. I started recording on camera "A" and everything went well. About 10 minutes into a recording (a speech) I received an error saying it had stopped recording. It did not say why. Immediately checking the drive, it showed almost 2 hrs of recording time left. When I hit record again, however, the camera would not record. The resulting recorded video shows on the camera and I can play it back there. I don't know why it won't record however and would like to understand.

2. As mentioned, the drive is formatted exFAT and I can play back the recorded video/audio on the "A" camera, but when I connect the drive to the "B" camera, it recognizes the drive, but does not see the recorded footage. It sees no files. To do anything with the drive in the "B" camera I would have to reformat the drive, which would lose the footage I do have, which I am trying to avoid. I don't understand why this is happening, as this camera also sees that the device is formatted exFAT.

3. When I plug the drive into my Predator Helios PC through the USB-C port, it first recognizes it, but then throws a generic error saying it does not recognize the USB device and instructs me to unplug and replug it in, which repeats the warning. When I first received the SDD I plugged it into the same PC and put a few files on it to test it, then formatted it without problems. Now it doesn't see it. I haven't tried to reformat it there as I am trying to save the footage.

As mentioned, I am trying to save the footage, but also understand/fix the problems I am having. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

This doesn't really answer your question, but the T7 isn't actually fast enough to use on cameras! I bought a T5 which worked well. When I went to get another one the T5's weren't available but T7's were. They weren't listed by BMD as compatible, but since the specs were faster than the T5 I thought I would take a chance and assume they would be on the compatibility list when it got updated. Wrong!

The T7 has better specs due to the caching it uses. When the cache fills up, the speed slows dramatically. In some of my tests I could only record for a matter seconds before it shut down, so I am actually surprised you got 10 minutes out of it.

Given all that, you have ventured into unknown territory for BMD cameras, so you will have to work hard to get an explanation for what has happened.

Sorry,
Darryl

Actually T7 Shield Portable SSD 1 and 2 TB versions are listed in the latest list of recommended drives for 6K, 6K G2 and 6K Pro

Thanks for the update. This is a new version of the T7 which, according to reviews, is actually faster than the T7 even though they have the same spec. I might investigate that one when I need more SSD's. I also checked out the supported media for BMPCC 4K, and the T7 Shield listed, but not for every codec/resolution.

Thanks.

Than you all that responded. I had one T5 previously and I have returned the T7(s) and purchased T5(s)

There's a supported media list for good reason.

The T7 isn't on it.

The T7 shield isn’t the same as the T7.

I see so many people posting on facebook with the same issues. I hope to see you T7 advocates posting your magic cures to those that can’t make a T7 work on their setup.

Does anyone have experience with the T7 Shield and a BMPCC 6K?

Blackmagic has tested it, IIRC.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Studio 18.6.5, MacOS 13.6.5
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
