What I see with a lot of gimbal use is that solo ops put their camera on a rig and never take it off.

So they shoot an entire production and every damn shot is super wide, orbiting for no good story telling reason and every stop, start or direction change is telegraphed while the gimbal tries to decide if the the input was from the operator wanting to pan or tilt or if it should “correct it”

You know what's even cringier than that? 80% drone shots and 20% wide orbiting gimbal where you can see the actual walking.

What makes me salty about gimbals beyond the above, especially the DJI ones, is their atrocious batteries and their battery and charger policy. Made me hate their batteries as much as I hate printers.

This entire short was shot pretty much completely using a gimbal in 6 hours, for the collaborative Film Challenge. It was the actors, myself and the writer doubling as a PA.

There's no way I could have gotten all the different shots without the gimbal. It allowed me to move quick in a small space. Where switching setups would have been much more cumbersome.

Kim, some of those hoverboard techniques almost have the feeling of a very long and very expensive crane. Glad you have shown us how it can work, but impossible for me to ever try these days!

There is very few good gimbal ops out there that can hide the mechanical movements of the device. I follow several Trinity operators on Instagram, and only a few can make it look as smooth as all get out.

If I ever have a chance, I’m always gonna lean steadicam.

There is a learning curve with gimbals but since everyone can just turn it on and start walking, you get all these horrible results.

If an OP found the best settings to go with their body and use case and practiced a lot, they can do almost everything a steadicam can, plus more options are available (pass to another OP, remote control ect).

The director, the cinematographer, the camera crew, the audio, the lighting team, the set design, the composer, the editor, the colourist all together making sense of it and the audience as the final participants in the creation as the witness in the forest that heard the tree fall, and all understand what that artifice means in a way that transcends our reality.

"Petty added that Blackmagic Design had aggressively increased its investment in new products during the last financial year, working on multiple new technologies. The firm differed from other technology companies in that it had always been self-funded and had never used investment capital, giving it enormous creative freedom."

Whatever it coming it needs to come at NAB. Otherwise I believe lots of BMD camera users will move in another direction.

I'm patient. I love the BMD ecosystem a lot. The Camera UI and OS is just so good. What I mainly want has been stated before. And, I think that BMD can deliver.

One of the most recent frustrations for me was that I couldn't trigger record remotely with that iPhone app (Bluetooth+) nor the attached Tilta Nucleus M. I would lose connection from the phone app and that would also prevent using the Record Button on the Tilta Nucleus M Hand Unit, which was also paired to the Bluetooth+ App. This is while I had the camera mounted to a car on a car mount, and we were sitting in the back bed of the truck hidden just out of frame. I was still able to pull focus and adjust iris on the Hand Unit luckily.

This means I really hope Blackmagic works on better integration for Lens Motors and Hand Units. Either with a lens motor port at the front of the camera to power the lens motor, and as well communicate, or a lemo port that lens motors can use for remote record trigger.

This would be useful overall for both the URSA Mini Pro and a potentially smaller box camera.

Again, I would love if Blackmagic made their own Lens Motors and Hand Unit that worked in unison with their Video Assist Monitors to display relevant information. I'd love Lens Mapping to happen with the Motors in camera via the communication with the Lens Motor.

New Camera and Mount Upcoming ?

PostThu Mar 09, 2023 3:44 pm

The delusional optimistic view:
Parts is a very broad brush that could mean screws or could mean more of their custom-designed camera sensors. So NAB 2023 could mean that the revolutionary reinvention of a BMD camera is a few weeks away. Proof of this is the slew of new products being released before NAB this year so those products don’t detract from the attention deserved by the new innovative camera products released at NAB.

The realistic pessimistic view supported by all the dire implications of 2022:
Nothing new at NAB that hasn’t already been released by the third week of March.

Sadly I’ve all but given up hope that a new mft mount cine camera is coming anytime soon. I found a barely used local pocket 4K for a great price, so grabbed it. I can’t say I really like its massive scale compared to my og pockets, but it will carry forward my investment in glass for some time to come.

I echo the sentiment of not wanting it for gimbal use, I’ll continue to use an OG for that until such time as 4K final output is actually demanded.

If Blackmagic never makes a box cam the Zcam or Panasonic is always an option, the sensor is a close enough match for b roll.

I hope to be surprised come NAB of course, usually when I finally buy something after a long wait the new thing comes out.

Delivering 4K from any of the BMPCC6K cameras recording 6K BRAW arguably is a superior image, but for those of us whose clients expect 2K/HD final deliverables, the BMPCC4K is still a great camera whether shooting 4K, 4K 2.4:1, or 2.6K at ISO 400 or 1250 using mFT, EF or especially PL cine glass.

I'm one who doesn't need the 6k or greater image. My biggest frustration is that used 4k's typically sell for 80% of new cost, I wanna deal deal! lol

So at NAB I'll be looking at what actually comes out. May end up buying a second 4k anyway. Or 6k.

I'll throw a request into the void:

High speed. Most cameras tap out at 120fps before we get into awkward crop territory. I do a fair bit of food based studio stuff so if it's not phantoms, it's RED. I haven't tried the ursa12k @ 240/super16

Would be interested if BMD could get something that could resolve great looking images at high frame rates.

With Blackmagic being notorious for preventing leaks, I'm curious where you've heard those rumors. I'm one of the many pounding the table for a box camera but it's mostly due to BM giving us cameras that need to be rigged yet have horrible rigging ergonomics. I wouldn't be opposed to a non-box form factor if they can give us some decent battery life and a maneuverable screen, resembling something like an FX3.

That being said, I'll keep dreaming of BMD going fully Modular, with a 4:3 dual gain sensor and electronic NDs...

60% Robusta and 40% Arabica – a winning combination.

Not too bitter yet sufficient caffeine kick, as necessary in the morning.

I'm very partial to doing half hot chocolate and half coffee. Basically like a Mocha.

Blackmagic Design Mocha Cinema Camera!!!

That's it the new naming structure for cameras should be based off coffee!

Take my money. Unfortunately though I read dual gain sensors are expensive to do so probably won't happen.

Laugh but Sony's new vlogging camera has some high-end features that the flagship A1, A7sIII and FX3 doesn't have.

LG UF 5k, 27" Tbolt Display, 55" LG C8
Resolve Edit Keyboard, Mini Panel, US 4K Mini
Resolve Studio Ver. 17.4.3

That's where the money is these days.

Regarding coffee: where I am right now, they grow some of the best.
There's a reason Americans are calling coffee 'java'.
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

I think it’s more in broadcast and event. The consumer market is dead, not that it was ever BMDs market.

They consume so much hardware compared to a vlogger.

I lived most of my life in Melbourne. The first reason we have such excellent coffee is that we imported a lot of excellent Italians. The second reason is that many of us have the good sense to have our overseas trips to Italy. Viva Italia!

I'm from Germany and once shot on location inside an Italian factory.

Like, assembly line factory, huge, auster. One of our crew came back from a coffee automat in some dark corner and stuttered something about 'oh my god so good'. So everyone grabbed one and what can I say, in Italy, even an automat in an assembly line factory has better coffee than most cafes in my country.
