BMPCC6k vs S1H vs Xh2s

PostTue May 30, 2023 3:47 pm

Title says it all…

I know this posts are obnoxious, so I apologize, but I’m feeling very overwhelmed with all of the aspects of filmmaking I foolishly chose to take on at once and would love some help deciding between these cameras

I’m trying to decide what ~2,500 camera to upgrade to from our BMMCC and would love to hear from people who have much more insight/expertise than I do

Thanks so much

Xh2s has the best dynamic range and best rolling shutter (nearly twice as fast as the other two cameras.) ProRes internal recording is awesome.

The BMPCC6K has the best color science and BRAW is amazing. Very awkward camera body though.

Haha I think you just boiled it down to my main thoughts immediately

So the question is how do people decide from there?

I guess the 6k is the winner then?

Can you elaborate what kind of WORK you're trying to create with your future tools?

Great point John-

Personal narrative projects, meaning created by my wife and our writing partner and myself, as well as one-off narrative projects for any friends/future collaborators that may arise

I don’t mind looking into slightly older cameras as well, but I know I’d like to stay in the $2,500 range

I would certainly go with the BMPCC6K then. The image is so naturally cinematic compared to the other two cameras.

I'd avoid the BMPCC6k then as the lack of IBS, intelligent AF and a built in EVF may be limiting if you want just one camera to do a lot of different things. Also look at offerings from Sony and the latest S5II rather than the S1H.

None of these three. Keep the BMMCC. Extra money you have invest in some Angelbird cards and good lenses like LUMIX 12-35, Leica 12mm Summilux 1.4, LUMIX 14mm f2.5...

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

And thank you Darko, I think, as usual, that’s what I needed to hear

We’re finally starting to get some nice footage and I’m really pretty blown away by what this camera can do. And we went with the SLR Magic APO Microprimes with the .58 ef speedbooster. I think the lenses are really similar to the BMMCC actually, pretty unbelievable what such an affordable piece of equipment is capable of producing

Sorry to everyone who contributed, I don’t want you to feel like you wasted time contributing, it’s just really easy to get carried away with the next “best” thing

You are welcome,

if you can get hands on Leica DG 12mm 1.4f and test for yourself, shoot in 1.4f aperture, it is very sharp wide open without causing moire with very decent FOV and beautiful shallow depth of field on that small sensor and amazing colours.

Lens is probably twice or 3 times as expensive as used BMMCC but is well worth it for what you get IMO real cinema for that camera.

Leica DG 15mm 1.7 is also great, as well as 12-35 for hand held work . I have all 3.

Decent camera and awesome lenses always outperforms everything but an awesome camera with awesome lenses.

Good choices there!
