Ursa Mini pro 4.6 G2 and Zoom F6 timecode sync problem

PostMon Dec 30, 2019 10:00 am

Trying to get the UMP G2 to accept timecode from the Zoom F6 but I'm not having any luck.
The cable I am using is this BNC/3.5mm one plugged into the BNC TC in port of the Ursa and out of the TC in/out port of the Zoom F6

"CAMVATE Right-Angle BNC to 3.5mm Mini Jack Timecode Cable" (I can't post urls, but it is on amazon us)

However the timecode does not show up on the Ext display part on the LCD, nor does EXT and the synced timecode show up on the monitor.

I have successfully synced the timecode of the same Zoom F6 with the same settings with the BMPCC4K. Ext shows up next to the timecode and timecode is in sync so I'm assuming everything works well.

The only difference I can think of between the Ursa and the 4k is the cable. Could that be the problem? Seems suitable according to the description though.

Any help most appreciated, thanks

No one successfully syncing timecode between the Zoom F6 and Ursa G2 with a cable? Am hoping that it is possible. Perhaps some Tentacles is the only solution.

Hi Chris,

I'm having the same issue - I have been using the Tentacle Sync cable which in theory should work fine. No TC being registered on my UMP G1.

Have you tried using the audio input to see if it jams via audio?

Cheers

I have successfully synced and jammed TC from a Zoom F4 to an Ursa G1 many times, but now use Tentacles as they are more bulletproof that jamming. I would try different cable first, and also check the F6 Menu for TC out settings. TC is an audio signal, and can be line or mic level. Both devices must be set to send and receive at the same level. I believe on the F4 the TC out needs to be set RTC to generate and send TC, but I don't have it front of me at the moment.
Creativity is the ability to accept ambiguity.

hello,
after a lot of trial and error I have managed to reliably sync the Zoom F6 to the Ursa via a custom cable.

Here is the wiring description:

Stereo male Minijack to male BNC cable

- red (right) cable of the minijack - > tip of the BNC
- white (left) cable of the minijack - > ring of the BNC

no connection is needed for the ground part of the minijack cable (I assume that is for sending timecode into the F6).

I have made a quick video:

Zoom F6 was set to Int. RTC

I hope that's helpful. Best

:Also make sure that F6 has the same frame rate as you have on Ursa.

That is really helpful, thank you. Unfortunately I have sold my Ursa - maybe I shouldn't have!

Strange that the solution worked as it's incorrect. The BNC shield is always ground for both audio and video connections. XLR pin 1 or TRS sleeve to coax shield and tip or XLR pin 3 (or 2) to coax center conductor. I've probably made a half dozen of these in the field when interfacing recorders that take LTC over BNC.

Wiring the sleeve (pin 2) to the coax shield is just sending the signal to ground so maybe a ground loop was helpful in this scenario. It also looks like the Tentacle output is unbalanced otherwise the ring should be sent to pin 2, tip to pin 3. Maybe the ring is grounded on the Tentacle side which is why it worked.

Good Luck
