iPhone 15 Pro and Blackmagic Cam app

PostMon Oct 02, 2023 11:59 am

iPhone 15 Pro and Blackmagic Cam app:
Currently, I am utilizing my iPhone, paired with an iRig Pre 2 (providing 48 volts of phantom power), in conjunction with professional microphones and wireless systems for sound recording.
If I were to transition to an iPhone 15 Pro Max and alternate equipment, would it be feasible to simultaneously capture audio input into the phone while also recording a 4K file onto an external SSD hard drive?
If yes, is there presently a portable hub on the market?

Apologies for answering my own post, but I just found a YouTube video where a filmmaker successfully connected an iPhone 15 Pro to an external SSD hard drive and recorded sound using an external microphone. Given this capability, it's likely that many manufacturers are currently working on creating hubs and camera rigs to accommodate all necessary components, including power sources, a sound monitoring port, and secure clamps for a complete setup. I'm not sure if this type of hub would be something that would interest Blackmagic... one can only hope.

I intend to experiment with adapting my iRig Pre 2 to a hub until a more elegant solution becomes available. The iRig Pre 2 features an XLR input for sound, 48v phantom power, a volume control for audio output, a mini headphone jack for monitoring, and a headphone volume control.

I've come to the realization that I can connect my Tascam DR-60DMKII, equipped with 2 XLR inputs, metering capabilities, and the ability to record high-quality audio backups on an SD card.

In the near future, I intend to maintain a database of my discoveries on one of my websites.

Question: I'm sharing this thread in the General section; should I consider posting it in a different category?

It’s looking like the iPhone 15 Pro is taking advantage of USB-C with possibly the only limitations related to the power it will supply to some devices. Having the phone connected to a hub that has sufficient power distribution will take care of those other devices potentially. Shame USB-C took so long to come to the iPhone and only because of the EU! Mustn’t cry over spilt milk.

This gives possible hope for multichannel audio recordings.
