My experience with non-photography people is this:
1) people have no clue what kind of quality is possible with various cameras
2) anything larger than a 35mm film camera and vintage 50mm F2 lens is a "big camera" and must take "professional" photos
3) any rig that is more than a camera body and lens (and potentially a tripod) can make you a "professional" depending on the person you're dealing with - if there are cables visible then you're definitely professional
That's why my preferred rig is a GX85 and small lens. It's at/below the FF film camera size threshold, but it shoots 4K 100Mbps, has IBIS, viewfinder and tilt screen, and fast/reliable AF-S with the right lenses. The image is as good/better than most broadcast content from more than a decade or so ago, which means that the camera isn't the limitation on the quality of my travel videos - that is editing / sound design / structure / etc.
Since social media has made cameras and images trendy there seems to be a myopic focus on the image, without much attention paid to anything beyond it. Compared to how much content there on camera specifications, there is practically no content on editing or sound design at all.. I suspect it's mostly just people trying to buy their way to better results, when good films are made with skill and not equipment.
