Good Handheld Footage with Pocket Camera

PostMon Jul 15, 2013 6:27 pm

I'm wondering how I might get the best handheld footage with the Pocket Camera.

Do those handles: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=855880&is=REG&Q=&A=details that are made for the Cinema Camera fit the Pocket Camera as well?

Either way, would they be a good way to stabilize the camera? If I have a lens hanging out the front, I feel like that balance might be a little top-heavy. Plus, with my fingers on the handles, I can't be ready on the draw to quickly change a zoom or another setting on the camera while filming.

Does anybody have any ideas on how you might capture some good handheld footage with the Pocket Cam? Something like the Canon XF100 that has that nice handle on the top and place for your hand on the side is nice to run and shoot with. But the smallness of the Pocket Cam has me a little worried.

I'll be filming little short films and short documentary-style things.

Any thoughts?

First, start off with basic handheld technique: put your left palm below the camera & lens, hold & control it with the right hand - you'll get much more stable recording than when you hold it only from one side. The camera has a standard thread on the top side, so you might add any number of "screw on" grips there. If you need more stabilization: think about a monopod, it's a good compromise between portability and stability. Any larger cage, handle, grip etc. is a step away from the "carry with you everywhere" concept.

I agree. The truly wonderful thing about this camera is the size. If you want to attach a bunch of stuff to it, you might as well get a larger camera. But if you want a recommendation, I would get a blackbird camera stabilizer. It takes a bit of practice to get good with it but for a camera this size, it can produce wonderful, fluid, smooth shots.

3 point contact.

Right hand on the camera, a stock (like the Zacuto striker) against your chest and your eye against a loupe on the rear LCD.

Rock solid and leaves your left hand free to focus.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of these brands of stabilizers.
Maybe I should add that I'd prefer something under, say, $200. Is that pushing it value-wise?

You don't need to buy the Zacuto Striker. It was just a common one that is easy to find. There are many cheaper options out there.

Search eBay for MagicRig.

If you want to make the rig smaller you can remove the handle. So you just use the stock on your shoulder and your hand on the camera body.

I have wondered what something like this would be like: http://bit.ly/1dDcth4

Seems versatile.

There are cheap steadicam knock offs on eBay too but not sure how rubbish they are.

I have a "Kamerar" / "Socom" / "Photography & Cinema" rig for my BMCC and at that price, I can't fault it:

Comes with an offset bracket that puts the camera in front of your face rather than your shoulder:

The most stable handheld footage, you'd probably get using a gimbal type stabiliser, but that comes at a hefty cost: http://www.besteady.pro
