BMCC EF Lenses Match

PostWed Jul 24, 2013 9:16 am

So after extensive research I'm looking at purchasing the following lenses to round out my arsenal to fully shoot with my BMCC EF and future 4K model:

Tokina 11-16
Sigma 18-35
Rokinon cine 85

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I guess my main question is will I have difficulties matching scenes with these different lenses in regards to color shifts. I only wish that Rokinon made cine lenses at a wide and maybe a 50. I can't use the Rokinon 14 for the non-removal tulip for my matte box. I am considering a 8mm sigma fisheye because I found that the Lock and Load plug in will remove fish eye? Has anyone done this?

I have the Rokinon set of lenses. I personally like the fisheye look from the 8mm. The plugin I used (PTLens) has presets for popular lenses. The since the Rokinon 8mm is not included in the presets you have to manually dial it in, which I have never really gotten perfect results. I can get the image to look a little better, but I have not been able to get rid of all sign of distortion. Sometimes it just looks warped in a slightly different way!

I think your lens setup looks good but you are definitely missing something around the 50mm range which can be a pretty convenient range to have. Probably more useful than the 85mm in my opinion. Depending on what you are shooting of course.

Jason,
How's your experience with rokinon 8mm?
I have returned two of them back to retailer after seeing that each of the units I received have exhibited noticeable breathing not only on z axis but in the x-y plane as well. When focusing the image would shift diagonally, as if lens elements are either tilted on axis or their optical centers shifted off axis or both during the assembly.

I like the lens - I wish it didn't distort so much. I had an Optar illumina 8mm PL mount that had zero distortion which was is my only comparison, so I do notice the distortion. I have noticed a bit of breathing when focusing but I didn't notice anything "off" about it. But as I think of it I haven't done a focus pull with the 8mm yet on a real production, so I probably have not really scrutinized that aspect of the lens. The depth of field usually being so deep, so I haven't run into that situation yet. I also have probably only used it 5-6 times so far.
