Fs700 an altunitive camera to the BMPC for 4k, at the price

Don't shoot me down if this has been discussed before (searched the forums and found nothing much)

Ok so I was Bored, bored, Bored of looking at the same stuff on the BMPC both here and online, so I decided to see what alturnitives there are out there, what other options we have to shoot at a low (ish) cost in 4k.

I trolled through loads of 4k cams and when you include the addons they get expensive.

This looks like a good deal.
When you look at the high speed option (that the BMPC doesn't have) and that you get a lens included, it has to be a decent option, at least an alturnitive to the BMPC.

NEXFS700UK
4K Sensor High Speed FS Series Camcorder (with Lens)
$9,137.33 U.S. List Price

At pro.sony.com

Has anyone shot with this camera? Any good?

I've been looking through some of the footage online and it looks very interesting and just in my budget.

I will need a 4k cam for a client and may look at his at Least as a rental option for one job.

I think it's a good camera but it won't do 4K out of the box. According to this link you'll have to spend an extra $9650 for Sony's solution or $5400 for the (less capable) Convergent Design solution.

Yep, the FS700 is a really nice cam, but you'll need external recording for 4k. The slow mo is sweet tho.

That package only shoots HD and the price excludes the 4K recorder.

You then need to add:
HXRIFR5 - Interface unit to interconnect NEX-FS700 to AXS-R5 RAW recorder.
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-HXRIFR5/
$2500

And
AXSR5 - 2K, 4K, RAW Recorder
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-AXSR5/
$6295

That doubles the price plus media cost at $1800 for 512GB

Your other option is to buy the Convergent Design Odyssey7Q plus media... Also not cheap.

From what I can tell the HMQ10 only records to the h.264/AVCHD format? I know not everyone needs codecs like ProRes or RAW but I don't understand why some cameras come out with some decent capabilities and then record to AVCHD? The HMQ30 is another one of theirs… Nikon F-Mount and current US equivalent price in Japan is $18k ??

Or is there some version of h264/AVCHD that can actually compete with something like ProRes?

Nice camera, but comparing apples to oranges.

The BMCC upscaled to 4K will give far superior images to the FS700, let alone the BMPC

It also records to 4 SD cards at once (each takes a 1080p quater basically). If that isn't a recipe for problems on set and in post I'm not sure what is. One card fails (or gets lost) and you lose the other 3 as well, even if that doesnt happen thats Cast Iron logging with 4 times the carsd to log.

All in all the JVC seems hard to place, a budget option that without the support of a non budget sized camera crew is risking headaches. Its form factor looks good for some styles of work, but they are often the ones that even with budget usually don't go for such crews.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was just looking at the options just to see what was out there. looking through the finer details of the fs700 i see Sony have had a little pop at black magic saying "we don't use off the shelve sensors like others" ha ha.

I'm like the rest of you guys just wanting a little piece of the camera (bmpc) to keep me going.

I still have my canons 5d, 7d and a 650 to play with, I'm shooting ZWOS2 with them at the moment for a client.

Id suggest you do a bit more homework. My money is on the fs-700 in this battle ( we own and shoot on one currently)

The plan is to go with the convergent design 4k solution.
The 7q is far more than just a recorder, the oled monitoring and other features for that price tag are a BARGAIN.

240 fps at 2k, 60 at 4k.... This combo is gonna smoke the bmcc 4k (as its specs stand now) not sure why people try to reduce the comparison to apples and apples.. Its not and never will be. Two entirely different goals from these two cameras, its NOT just about 4k vs 4k

Still gonna buy the pocket cam and 4k versions once they hit the street, hell might even pick up an EFT mount BMCC on the used market one of these days.

Is the FS700 8-bit 4:2:2?

Out of the box it is 8bit 4:2:0 HD.

But with the 4K upgrade it will shoot in 12bit RAW in 2K or 4K
