Blackmagic Cinema Camera synchro scan?

PostFri Aug 02, 2013 7:19 pm

Hello all Cinema Camera Owners and Users

I am very interested in purchasing a Cinema Camera. I do some live production video, primarily concerts and corporate events. In these events there is a stage and the lights that are used are not all proper video lights. Many of them are LED par cans. Some LED lights have a flicker to them that are not noticeable to the human eye, but when shown through a camera are VERY noticeable. In the productions that I have done the company I am contracted with will rent cameras, mainly the Panasonic AG-HPX370. These cameras have a feature called SynchroScan (Sony - Clear Scan) which allows the operator to adjust the shutter speed in very fine increments depending on the mode of the camera anywhere from 1/24 second to 1/250 second

Is there any such feature on any of the Blackmagic cameras. If so how "use-able" is it. what are the increments?, is it a fine adjustment?

Another example of using this feature would be to capture a computer monitor.

Thanks to any and all responses
Josh

I already own a ATEM Production Studio 4K, UltraStudio Mini Monitor, and Recorder and love them.

The current firmware for the BMD cameras allows a few selections of shutter angle to determine your exposure. There is no fine tuning of that as you describe. You can refer to the details in the camera manual which can be downloaded from the Support web pages. Even without fine adjustments, you may be able to find a combination of frame rate and shutter angle that gives you good results with a problematic LED--but you would need to provide more details and hope someone here has used those lights successfully with their camera.

I've filmed LED Floods before with the BMCC and everything was smooth, no issues. But I can't tell you what kind of LED's they were.. all I know is that they were LED floods for made for video.

Show LEDs have become a real problem for shooting - the way they colour mix by dimming can mean that each unique colour will pulse at a different rate. I've had some colour combinations that couldn't be cleared up even with clear scan.

Shot an entertainment chat show last week with BMCC where they were using cheap LED par cans - it wasn't good.

With the limited shutter selection of the BMCC I'd be staying away from corporate events - rock & roll's not so bad as they expect quick lighting :-)

I have encountered the same problems with LED lights on events. We are doing live camera work with Sony PMW 350 and EX3s. I have found that on certain LEDs even using Clearscan was not enough to get rid of flickering. I talked to the lighting technician and together we worked out to reduce the brightness of certain colors - especially some of the blues got really flickery. This was with quality LEDs.
Another problem with cheap LEDs was that there seemed to be a pulsating pattern in the shadows of the recorded image. Never got rid of that.

On one show I did a test recording with the BMCC and I had no problems with the LED pars - but that could have been sheer luck. What I really liked was that the high dynamic range of the BMCC was able to work well with those always used now blue LED light where normal cameras just show a face flat in blue the BMCC holds the detail.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
