Should I Attempt this Crazy Idea? (and how!)

PostThu Mar 05, 2020 5:28 pm

I've been working on a passion project for a number of years. A feature film called "Alien Country."
on facebook @aliencountrymovie

As part of the concept trailer we filmed at a demolition derby in Utah. Which was amazing! Some of the best footage we captured was from a couple of Pocket 4k's. Although we had multiple drones and another A-cam. I walked away with a huge takeaway. We want to shoot a lot of the car and motorcycle with an FPV drone. You can see is an example of the footage we captured although it's all GoPro quality. @skyberries_fpv on IG.

The film is funded, so it's happening! The real question I am brainstorming is how I can potentially take the quality in terms of the pocket 4k or 6k cameras, strip one down and build a custom rig that can match the maneuverability of the FPV camera we used.

I have shot on the micro-cinema and micro-studio cameras. However, because of the quality demands of our final deliverable, I feel that those options fall short of the image we need. Aside from that, we would still basically be stripping down the cameras regardless, so I'd love to be able to still make this crazy idea work.
Fabricating is less of a concern... what we really need is advice on how to essentially take apart a 4k or 6k so that it basically can set exposure, shoot BRAW to an on-board card, and start and stop recording. (No screen necessary.)

I'd love to hear thoughts! You are allowed to call us crazy... :)

From a YT video that shows how to make the screen swivel, it looks like the main circuit board is quite wide. Personally would like to see them update the Micro Cinema Camera to 4K at about the same price point, maybe they'll announce at NAB.

You're gonna need to be some type of hardware guru... and... you're going to void the camera warranty... So why not spend the $1300 on something closer to what you need. And if a Micro Cinema camera doesn't have good enough quality for you, then you're looking at sensor characteristics which is a dangerous place to be in your position. Not to mention that the GoPro Hero 8 doesn't look bad at all. It definitely doesn't have the dynamic range of a cinema camera, but it doesn't look bad.

It seems like you want cinema quality on a racing type drone. Is this true? I don't think you'll be successful here... Otherwise you can probably rent an Inspire 2 with a Zenmuse camera. Or put your Pocket 4k on a bigger drone.

What about this DJI system? https://store.dji.com/product/dji-digit ... &vid=83421 Although, you probably just need the camera.... If you're going to get a Pocket 4k and strip it down, this would be less money.

The camera is $179 by itself: https://store.dji.com/product/dji-fpv-a ... ?vid=82731

Maybe have a look at the Sony RX0 and at videos that have been made with it. There are a number on the Sony Alpha Universe channel made with version 1 of the camera, such as this one:

There are also some behind the scenes videos, including for the video above.

This is a detailed video on how to set up an RX0 v.1 to shoot S-Log 2/using an RX0 with neutral density filters (version 2 lowered the S-Log 2 ISO):

Video Cameras: iPhone, Pocket 4K
Microphones: Schoeps, DPA, Voice Technologies
Audio Recorder: Sound Devices
Monitor: Eizo
Computers: Mac Studio, iPad Pro

Another option might be the Sigma fp, which is considerably smaller than a BMPCC and can deliver very good quality. But beware of the slo-mo and windowing, it's crap.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

If the other BM cameras are an example, you will find out the main processor board which may or may not also have sensor mounted to it also will be permanently attached to sockets, switches and battery, ribbon cables which cannot be disconnected. The casework is already rather lean. The chances of injuring some thing during an awkward dissembly will be high. Assuming you can gut the camera body yet keep the mount somehow, you may end up with a RF interference problem with came a parts in proximity of other working systems in the drone. The only space you nay save may be the battery enclosure and the position of the switches on the right of the body which may be movable to the left if the ribbon cables permit.

Better brains will have more valid things to say. I would recommend not hacking up your BM camera. It may end up being a futile learning experience unless you have some really fine dextoral skills and experience with micro-electronics.

Your biggest problem is the glass I would imaging. Its (relatively) big beause it uses a sensor that is much, much, much bigger than any FPV drone.
