Has anyone used this the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM?

I am in the process of getting a new wide angle soom for my vmcc and I was considering this one. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks!

I think that people like it. The only real negative I have heard is the short focus throw.

Thanks! I haven't heard about that so I'm going to do some research. I want to get either a wide angle (prime) or a zoom lens in the $500 price range and this looks like a good option.

I have the Tamron 17-50mm and of all my lenses, this is the one where the crop factor of the BMCC really comes into play. If you're not used to it before it's probably not that big of a deal but I used it with my 7D and now my EOS M and it loses so much that I'm saving up for the 11-16mm Tokina now.

If you are familiar with the field of view on a full-frame camera like the Canon 5D, this lens is the equivalent of 39mm to 114mm. That may not be wide enough. Another very impressive zoom is the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. The 18-35 is probably sharper in the centre wide open. The 17-50mm Sigma includes image stabilization and the 18-35mm lens does not.

As Dustin mentioned, the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 does a nice job of serving as your wide angle zoom on the BMCC with a full-frame equivalent of 25-36mm. The Sigma 8-16mm is another popular choice and is a rectilinear lens, not a fisheye. The Sima gets you a full-frame equivalent 18mm which usually satisfies most requirements.

Check out the very detailed reviews on the German Photozone site and Lenstip.com. Remember when they talk about the corner sharpness or other lens characteristics, that may not apply to the BMCC since its sensor is smaller.

You have a few choices now, the Sigma 17mm-50mm f/2.8 New $569.00
is a very nice lens that has OS/Image Stabilization (Optical Stabilization).

Then you have the new Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 new $799.00
That does not have Optical Stabilization but is much faster at f/1.8 .

The 17-50 is an awesome lens! I have one. It does have a short focus throw, it takes time to get used to, but it's not that big of a deal. It works great handheld with the $50 follow focus because short throws are perfect for that follow focus.

Thanks everybody. All these are great inputs and I appreciate it. Ideally, the sigma 18-35 seems like the best out of the list. However it seems to be in backorder at most retailers online. The ones who do have it in stock want an extra $100 which is just too much. So I'm going to sleep on it and make up my mind first thing tomorrow. I have a shoot Saturday and I got to have a wide angle by then. I'm used to shooting on the 5Dmkii so this small sensor is a big adjustment. I have plenty of great lenses but nothing as wide as what I need for the bmcc. My widest is 28mm and even that is a telephoto on the bmcc.
Cheers.
