Autofocus and Canon lenses in BMPCC4K?

PostWed Mar 11, 2020 2:49 pm

Hello, I got a new BMPCC 4K and I will like to use Canon EF lenses with it, and be able to use the autofocus function.

So far, I tried Canon 24-105 IS I with a Viltrox EF M2 II adapter, the autofocus button is not working. Should I get the new Metabones for BMPPC 4K? Is autofocus going to work with the Metabones adapter?

Thanks guys for your help.

I don't have the Viltrox adapter but other users here reported that you might need to downgrade to a certain firmware version (2.3 I think) which will work with that lens.

Myself got the Metabones adapter and with that AF does work, albeit don't expect it at any level comparable to on a native Canon camera.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I can confirm that iris control on this combination did not work with Viltrox firmware 3.4, but does work with firmware 3.3. As far as autofocus, it doesn't work when the focus button is pressed but even worse does operate when powering up the camera.

Others have recommended firmware 2.3. Viltrox had all these firmware versions on their website.

With Metabones, in what sense? will the autofocus work in a slow way compared to a native camera?

I tried firmware 2.3 and it doesn´t work. I am thinking about selling the camera and try to get a 6K. I need autofocus.

If you need fast autofocus, the BMPCC cameras are not for you. Get a Sony camcorder or the like.
It's called a 'Cinema' camera for a reason.

Uli is right. AF with EF lenses via an adaptor either Metabones or Viltrox is so slow it's quicker to focus manually. With native M43 lenses it's a lot better.

If you need AF, then unfortunately all current Blackmagic cameras are not for you. Even with native M34 lenses AF is ok-ish, but everything but fast.
I am using this on my PCC4K rig for manual remote focus:

That works very well for me.

Thanks, Robert. PD Movie Live-Air Remote has some advantages over the dual manual system I use for the SLR Magic Anamorphot adapter. Would be a useful addition to the BMPCC4K when using spherical lenses.

I am thinking about getting the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II. Would I be able to use the autofocus buttom?

I had the BMPC 4k EF camera with Canon 24-105, and that autofocus speed was enought for me. I am just looking for something similar to that.

That would be similar.

Also look at the OL 12-100 F4 which has identical AF - slower F stop but more range, better MF control and much better IS.
