Coloring 8bit footage?-> New camera needed

PostSun Mar 15, 2020 10:19 pm

Hi, not sure is the right section.

Anyway I need absolutely to upgrade from my old Nikon d5200 Asap.
Major factors is that I am using for photography too and budget is sorta small.

I was thinking going on the new canon 90D with (later) a sigma 18-35mm but thing that makes me not sure is the missing 10bit (and log) output.

Question is: will I be able to do some fairly good CG with it? Videos are gonna be used for almost only youtube.

I did it with my Nikon (and videos are online) but not with very good results.

It would be easier to give you some advice if you link one or two of them, tell us what you wanted to achieve and what you don't like about them now.

Generally speaking: Any camera recording highly compressed 8 bit footage should be set to a picture profile as close as possible to the intended look and exposed carefully. IOW: avoid grading.

If you need room for creative grading and overcoming challenging shooting conditions, you need a camera with 10 bit (minimum) log recording. IMHO, the BMPCC 4K is the cheapest option.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you for your answer Uli.

What I am looking for are the usual suspects in the amateur world, Gh5, a6400, Fuji x3, 90d (not so popular?).
The major problem I have with my old Nikon is color banding and shift. And the complete look is always off. (True to say I never really tried to have a very good image in camera, always flattened the image).
Now is a 10yo camera...

On all dlsr/mirrorless cameras I saw there is a tradeoff (like always). Trying to have video/photo good capability in the same machine seems difficult in this pricerange?

Actually maybe not really Color grade is what I need, but correction and boost

I'll link here some of the videos I made (and trying not to be ashamed of the video quality)

If I was super budget restricted I'd look at getting a used GH5 like this: https://offerup.com/item/detail/805049913/

Otherwise, I'd look in to a VideoAssist, or Atomos recorder to see if I could get better footage with external recording. It looks like you can get 4:2:2 8 bit with your Nikon. https://www.atomos.com/cameras/nikon-d5200

A used GH5 type camera + external recorder may be the best route.

I have zero experience with these cameras, but a quick search shows that the Fuji X-T3 can record 10-bit internally and offers a log mode.

The GH5 also records 10-bit internally but there have been discussions that the actual overall quality of its 10-bit mode is actually lower than that of its 8-bit mode because the bitrate is too low:

The X-T3 seems to offer higher bitrates for its video recording, but do note some of its limitations (recording time limits, no image stabilization...):

As to the issues with color shift, have you tried doing a white balance against a gray card and using a color chart to calibrate (https://smile.amazon.com/Datacolor-SCK2 ... UG3R1Y23YM)?

Thanks for your input!
My Nikon only output 30p from hdmi :(. Well, I think the Atomos could be a nice upgrade whatever camera I will use, will be canon, panasonic or fuji right? (downside of canon still only 8bit but gain 4:2:2).

Never really considered 2nd hand market, as I take too much care of my gear and worry that previous owner didnt! But true I will check around.

The pocket 4K is not really for stills right? And never got any really good lens for the Nikon, (decided to jump ship a while ago, so seems pointless to invest in glass I wont reuse). But, true I can use the d5200 for stills and the new for video.... hmmm.

This is exactly the point I want to evaluate. I try not to get biased by specs numbers or youtube "New AWESOME best camera of 2020...." kind of review (although I checked them :/). And not having any experience beside the Nikon d5200 makes the evaluation quite hard. From my understanding bitrates makes more difference than 8/10bit. And the advantage of 10bit is the amount of control you get in post.

If ergonomics and aesthetics is a factor I would rule out the xt3. One thing I like (and didnt consider) is the limitless recording time of the gh5, and from what I could see the look and colors of the canon both in stills and video wins (but got only 8bit and couldnt really find the bitrate). Also, beside the fact that I like viewfinders and the dlsrs (sorta dumb, but i like the idea of REALLY seing my shot when taking pics), maybe have to consider going to mirrorless? or maybe wait until they mature a little more. hmmm...

I might have to invest in good color chart to help me, true that!

Wait for the virtual NAB 2020 if you can.

Brilliant idea Rick, if any one could do a on-Line virtual NAB, you would think this group should be able to do so...
