viewfinder options for the BMPCC?

PostWed Aug 14, 2013 12:51 am

I've been picking up up some peripheral equipment that I'll need when my Pocket Cam finally shows up. One of the items that I've been looking to get is a viewfinder or loupe to fit on it. I'd prefer the cheaper option of an optical solution rather than a full on EVF, but am willing to get one. I have a loupe to fit on my Canon, but it has a 3" screen and thus the loupe is a tad too small for the 3.5 inch display on the BMPCC. I've been searching, but haven't found any optical viewfinders that fit a 3.5" screen. Anybody have any suggestions?

This post ( http://hybridcamerarevolution.blogspot. ... -ship.html ) has an interesting idea for a DIY Loupe, with a $50 Cavision that apparently can be adapted to a 3.5" screen.

Personally I'm waiting til the camera is in full release to buy a loupe/evf, just to see if Zacuto or the like comes up with a good Z-Finder type option, otherwise I may just stick with a monitor.

Thanks for the info.

I think I'll go that route. I would like to wait and see myself, but once I get my BMPCC, if I don't have a viewfinder for it, any time I want to shoot outdoors on a sunny day, I'll have a hell of a time seeing what it is I'm shooting.

It doesn't come cheap, but what about a Zeiss Cinemizer?
I'd say it fits the shooting styles you can achieve with the BMPCC.

lol, I'd never heard of this until just now, I would love to see somebody running this rig, it would definitely simplify the mounting process on stabilizers and shoulder rigs if you didn't have to figure out what to do with your monitor..

If you are walking around with your camera, you'd better have an AC to keep you from tripping lol.

I'm thinking about Carry Speed's VF-4... When you flip it up the fixed part works like a hood for the LCD. Seems nice, while not expensive. There are other models too, with rails, etc..

If there is one killer feature I would love to see in a later BM camera is a small EVF like you get on GH cameras etc.

In all of the research I have done the only optical loupe with a diopter adjustment have found that by specs will cover the 3.5" screen of the BMPCC is the Hoodman hoodloupe with the Hood riser that converts the loupe to work with screens up to 4".

There are several options for affixing it to the camera. I am not sure which direction I will go in as yet. One is a velcro neoprene sleeve which could be modified to go around the lens housing on the BMPCC by cutting a simple curve into the velcro straps.

The other option which is very versatile but I think may be a bit clunky is called the Hoodman Hoodcrane. It adjusts in all directions and has the ability to hinge up and out of the way to allow naked viewing of the viewfinder. I have a call into Hoodman to discuss what the options are and make sure it will work with the hood riser mounted as well and get their overall advice.

But this should provide a solid viewfinder that fully covers the screen and allows a nice bracing point with the eye for added steadiness. By the way Blue Star makes a chamois cover that fits this loupes eyepiece. It is the Small Round eyepiece and will help with perspiration and potential fogging which pressed up against the eyepiece on hot days.

The guys at Carry speed say to me as I wrote in an other tread on this topic that their VF-4 is not good for BMPCC.
At the moment there is NO LOUP for BMPCC
vendors at Adorama and B&H in NYC confirmed it to me this week
