ProRes Greyed out when Connected to ATEM Mini on BMPCC 4K

PostSun Apr 26, 2020 4:42 am

Hey all, I'm trying to build a rig using the ATEM mini to control camera color, exposure and focus, but when I try to record to local disk while connected via HDMI to the ATEM mini, I cannot access any of hte ProRes formats available normally. Why is this feature greyed out?

This wasn't an advertised tradeoff for the ATEM controls. Is this a must or a bug?

Best,
Tracy

If you mean by local disk, do you mean a disk connected to the ATEM Mini or to the USBC on the camera?
You should be able to record directly to the Pocket 4K CFast card in ProRes, unless BRaw is the only option?
Cheers

Hi, this is as intended.

The control features are only available when using Blackmagic RAW.

See page 59 of the user manual.

Thanks Christian, I was thinking this might be the case. Got to read that new manual...

Just got shipping confirmation for my two orders. Didn't know this was the case, would have really like to be able to record ProRes.

Demetrius, will you transcode the BRAW to ProRes in post vía DaVinci Resolve? That added step could give you one more chance to tune the look for subsequent on demand broadcast.

Exactly the answer I needed, thanks, Kristian, it would be neat if there was an option to trade certain CC functions vs prores but undertandable if it's not something that is flexible. I just need to teach my clients to use BMRAW in their pipelines, not the hardest thing to do. Remote camera control is far more important to me.

Just discovered this "feature" today. I set up a multi-cam setup for a piano teacher who is teaching online and sometimes wants to take and upload a 4k video of her playing too. She doesn't want to learn video editing and my set-up is already too complicated for her comfort. Just wants to plug the T5 drive into her Macbook Air, lightly massage with iMovie, and upload to YouTube.

Unless I downgrade to non- ATEM aware camera code, she would need to unplug the HDMI cable and go into the camera menus to switch to ProRes then?

I have not tested this yet, but in theory, once the camera is unplugged from the ATEM Mini, you should be able to select ProRes again in camera Recording menu.

Hey Rick!

My original excitement was the thought of being able to record live streams for clients in ProRes, fine tune in Final Cut Pro X and give them next day deliverables to post to YouTube and their various outlets. Planned on this being a Covid-19 option for corporate clients so having to go BRAW, then to ProRes in Resolve adds steps and time to the workflow.

ProRes Greyed out when Connected to ATEM Mini on BMPCC 4K

Perhaps using BRAW Q5 would be acceptable and you save storage and media card costs to compensate. What flavour of ProRes did you want to use?

This is exactly why I was banking on being able to record ProRes so that the end footage can be handed off to small business owners that have no desire to be a professional video editor, but can easily work their way around iMovie or something to have an online presence to sustain business during quarantines etc.

Is the option of ProRes not being available when recording from ATEM Mini Pro a way to steer all users to use BRAW or an Apple licensing thing? Would love to know... Otherwise I feel i'm being forced to work a certain way as Apple makes me feel as they continue to introduce new hardware etc..

I had planned on using ProRes 422 or LT. As MarkK02474 stated, it would be nice to give a cheaper package to clients to where I hand them the ATEM Mini recording files and they fine tune their own edit for YouTube etc as opposed to paying more to have me do it. I think his details of filming the piano teacher on multiple cameras is perfect for what would normally be in person lessons, lectures, or trainings. They're not going to be advanced enough to transcode BRAW etc. It would definitely be a win win for some of us that have had larger productions stop and quarantined small business owners a cost effective option.

I’m not clear on this use case. If you’re going to completely re-edit a live stream, what is the point of live streaming? Shoot ProRes, edit in iMovie, post, done. The camera is recording sensor data not the stream, maybe that got lost somewhere.

Good Luck

I agree with Howard, not sure what you are trying to do? But Demetrius, if you want to record the switched stream from the ATEM Mini, and can live without the multiview, then you can record the program out on the switchers HDMI to a Hyperdeck Mini in either ProRes or. H.264, or just record the USB h.264 out this Piet to a USB hard drive. Also a Video Assist connected to the HDMI out will give you a ProRes file.

The grayed out ProRes selection on the Pocket 4K, is the camera’s internal ProRes recording option, which is restricted to BRaw when the camera is connected to the ATEM Mini. The camera still outputs it’s normal 4.2.2 10-bit video stream to the switcher.

Is there a way to stop camera control on the atem software?
I want to record in prores on my 3 pocket cams via ssd and just stream via atem extreme.

I agree there are times where camera control is quite limiting, and annoying.
Ther should also be a way to trigger record on all cams connected.

That’s not a problem.
If you use a mini iso you can check the box record to all cameras.
Then you record the streams and program to a disk attached to the stem (also a DaVinci timeline) and all cameras record in 4K or 6k to attached harddrives or cards.

If you add between atem and camera a bad hdmi splitter it ruin crc data’s from hdmi cable and atem cannot see that there is a Blackmagic camera to the opposite and prores is avaible. I had a hdmi cable breaked that for a bad torsion I break some internal connection and I loose audio from it and crc connection, I can see video and use in with pocket and atem but atem cannot control pocket, and pocket show me prores option.
