SSD for original BMCC 2.5k

PostFri Jun 05, 2020 11:24 pm

Will a Samsung 860 EVO 500gb be sufficient for RAW recording on this cam?

If not please let me know a budget option that can.

Thanks!

I have successfully tested the SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 2 TB with the original BMCC 2.5k
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Quick note:
I bought 2 Kingston HyperX 480 GB around 2015. One is failing after being used maybe 50-80 hours inside my BMCC. Disappointing.
I will buy a SanDisk Ultra 3D 500 Go, 2.5".
Thanks Mister Niessner from Graz.

Most of these are not manufactured anymore.

If that SanDisk doesn't work I have successfully recorded a concert to an Axagon M.2 SATA adapter and used a WD Red SA500 M.2 SATA drive inside and so far so good. This is on a Production Camera 4K.

I think the Crucial MX500 series drives work. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I have the 500G version. My BMCC uses uncompressed RAW at the moment and after an hour it starts to drop frames. Just to check I switched to prores hq and all is fine after two hours of recording. So if you want to shoot RAW for over an hour make sure you use the latest firmware for the BMCC with compressed RAW.

Samsung 850 PRO series are used in Odyssey 7Q / 7Q+

Officially supported by Convergent Design in one of they software updates to succesfully capture 2.8K ARRIRAW without any issues or dropped frames, I believe 840 Pro series is also approved.

Mind you this disks are now over 10 years old, I have 12 of them both 840 and 850 and recently shot over
20 hours of ARRIRAW footage without single dropped frame.
I also use them in BMCC 2.5 K without any issues...
You may need to try few, they are dirt cheap now, old but so capable, just a matter of getting good one.
You want 1TB don't go for anything less as they are slower to write, reason why only 1TB was supported for Odyssey 7Q as far as I remember.

I often look back and wonder if tech was really that much improved in the past 10 years.
I mounted old black WD 3.0 HDD 3TB drive thay was 12 years old and it was snappy as Hell, was writing 125 MB/ sec files consistenty, at the same time I had NVME M2 4GB cards advertise to read / wrote 4000 MB/sec statting off really fast and then dropping to like 50MB/ sec....

These 840/85O pro series drives are good and BMCC 2.5 loves it, recognise it and record both ProTes and
CDNG...
860 series I am not sure those where created at the later dates ...

Unfortunately Samsung cheapened out on NAND used in their latest drives. Used to be 2bit MLC...Now its all TLC ("good enough")...Just not the same... I also have 850Pros used with a Ursa Mini 4.6K since it came out and they're still going strong.

You can still find the 850 Pro at Amazon, but for a crazy price.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
