VA does not accept 1080p@60Hz

PostTue Jun 16, 2020 7:16 pm

Hi,

I am using a BMCCP 4K with a VA 7" 12G HDR.

Whatever settings I choose I cannot get 1080@60hz to work on the VA as I get a flickering image with red/blueish lines. Up zo 30Hz it's all good and when I use the HDMI from my PC to the VA at 60Hz it works fine too.

Did anyone experience similar issues?

Thanks,

Are you referring to 1080p60 (frame rate) or? The VA and camera only have a frequency sync choice of 50 or 60Hz. The Pocket 4K only outputs a 1080p signal, which includes 1080p60. But not all HDMI cables will transmit a 60fps signal. Be sure you are using a newer High Bandwidth HDMI 2 or 3 cable. I had this happen with a new HDMI cable that worked at 1080p30, but not 1080p60 signal.
Cheers.

Hi Denny,

I am referring to the frame rate, yes.

When you say "the signal includes 1080p60" then I assume you mean that I select the output frame rate to be 60fps on my pocket camera. Otherwise as I said it works below or equal 1080p30.

The cable I bought is from Kabeldirekt, Germany. They claim to be 4K capable at 60Hz. I am wondering if my test of using the cable from PC <--> VA is sufficient to proof it be fully functional...

Can you recommend a certain cable otherwise? Also I have attached a photo of me holding the camera - you can hopefully clearly see those red and blue noisy lines on the VA. Can you confirm this is the same issue you had?

I read about broken HDMI on the pocket 4K so I am a bit worried mine is broken on the get go...

Best regards,

If the cable works correctly and you get a good image at 1080p30 or lower frame rate, than the camera is OK, it’s the cable, when you have an issue only with 1080p60 or above. Try one of the new HDMI fiber hybrid cables, they seem to work very well, especially for long runs. How long is your HDMI cable?

SmallHD sells high bandwidth cables in shorter camera/monitor 1-meter or less lengths, that I have used without any issues.

Hi Denny,

I have just ordered a 0.75m cable from Oehlbach instead of the fiber hybrid cable and will see how that performs.

The reason for not choosing the Oehlbach cable is the fiber ones are unidirectional and I want to make full use of the VA.

Thanks,
Fabian

The fiber/ copper hybrid are bidirectional, and I use one with a Pocket 4K and the ATEM Mini Pro, to get bidirectional Camera Control.
Cheers.

The Oehlbach HDMI Cable does not work. It is definitely better than my other two cables before but I still get noise from the cable in audible and visible from.

On Monday an HMDI fiber cable will reach me and I will report if that does the job.

Even though the cable is bi-directional, it as a source (Camera) and display ends, so get them the right way round. Good luck.

The issue still persists. I see some of those red/blueish lines less frequent but they occur still quite regularly.

What can that be? I have an optic HDMI cable connected and honestly, this is not the cable any-more at this stage... Also I disabled everything on the camera that cause an effect. Same goes for the firmware: It is up to date.

Has anyone else seen this issue on the Blackmagic Video Assist 7'' 12G together with a BMPCC 4k?

Best regards,
Fabian

The support could not help either, not even were they able to recommend a cable from their experience.

Finally, I decided to return every item I bought: The BMPCC 4k, Video Assist, Lens, Cables, etc.

It is so long ago I even don't remember, if at all, the last time I had such a bad user experience with technical gear.

This thread can be closed by concluding: Really, do not get a BMPCC 4k + Blackmagic 7" 12G VA as on 60Hz via HDMI it just doesn't work.

Anyways, Denny thanks for your support.

Best regards,
Fabian

Just for the record:
My PCC4K does work perfectly in 1080p60 together with my Atomos Shogun Inferno, Atomos Shinobi SDI, and Atomos Sumo. Very strange problem you got.
Have you been able to output a 1080p60 signal to a TV without issues?
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Same here Robert, no issues outputting a 1080p60 signal from the Pocket 4K either. Works with the ATEM Mini and my Video Devices Pix E 5-inch recorder/monitor.
