BMCC Stabilizer?

PostTue Aug 27, 2013 3:06 am

Has anyone tried their BMCC with a stabilizer with effective results?

I'm waiting for Defy's G5, but just wondering if there's something more affordable out there that can produce similar results. (Granted, we've seen little from the G5 yet in terms of footage, I'm just assuming it will deliver)

So...anyone?

Well, if you strip down your camera to pretty much just the lens and body, you should be able to use it with a Merlin 2 or even one of the cheaper steadicam rigs. I have one of the Opteka Steadyvid Pro, though I haven't tried using it with my BMCC yet.

I got rid of my Steadicam Merlin when I saw Andrew Julian was using a Blackbird with the BMCC. Overall I couldn't be more pleased. The Merlin never seemed to balance properly even with a lighter camera like the 7D. None of the steadicam shots you see in this video have post stabilization on them. They are speed-ramped, however, just to highlight what the homeowner wanted the audience to see.

Sigma 8-16 on the steadicam shots. Sigma 17-50 for some of the others.

Ever tried running around with the blackbird? Just how effective can it be? Looks small and glidecamish.

I'm not sure if you could run with it. It definitely has more limitations than a gimbal system, but then again it is $400.
