Backup Audio Solutions for new Documentary?

PostTue Aug 27, 2013 2:31 pm

Hi,
Hopefully quick question and one I hope hasn't been asked too many times. I'm embarking on my first Blackmagic filmed documentary. I've done my first interview which looked awesome and the audio turned out well but there were moments with the audio that made me think I need to secure my audio setup more. I'm using a Sennheiser ME66/K6 shotgun with the Zoom H4N as my main source of audio (there was a cat that went after the mic and a dog roaming about that caused problems inbetween takes). I'm interviewing someone in their home and don't really want to bring in a bunch of extra people or a crap load of gear. I'd been thinking of trying to get a solution for the Blackmagic itself so I would have at least an acceptable backup track so I'm not totally reliant on the Zoom (An audio engineer I know was able to salvage a test clip by removing the fan noise but I'm hoping to skip that step if possible). Audio is not my forte. I can appreciate good audio and know when it's wrong but I still get paranoid about it as it feels very out of my control.

I've been looking into lavaliers and perhaps the Rode Videomic Pro that could act like the wee Rode on my DSLR (not great but not riddled with fan noise either, something that can be played with in post to be documentary acceptable). I'm an indie filmmaker working as a one man crew so I'm not expecting or asking for miracles or a pro audio recorder to fall from the heavens. But any solutions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I have been reading about the Rode Videomic on here a bit but all the talk of different cables and adapters has befuddled me as to which I should get if I get the mic.
