CFExpress for 12K G2?

PostSun Aug 02, 2020 12:41 am

I'm curious whether the next 12K model will go CFExpress for internal media? This is because the write speeds are far better than CFast 2.0. When the Max Write Speed is around 1,500 MB/s and the Minimum Write Speed is 400 MB/s that's better than the usual Max Write Speed (450 MB/s) and Minimum Write Speed (150 MB/s) of CFast 2.0. There's a massive difference and I feel like CFExpress must be better suited for internal recording of 12K resolution in BRAW 5:1 or Q0.

CFExpress for 12K G2?

PostSun Aug 02, 2020 2:45 pm

Timing likely played a huge factor in the design. Anyone with experience might be shy about adopting a version 1 format that had been defined three years ago when the work was just beginning on the UMP12K. Version 2 was too late to use. That’s what you’ll see I suspect for UMP12K G2.

From Wikipedia:

The CFexpress 2.0 standard was announced on 28 February 2019. It features two new card formats ("type A", one lane, more compact and "type C", four lanes, bigger and thicker, up to 4 GB/s), with the existing cards designated as "type B". The NVM Express protocol was upgraded to 1.3.

It will be CFast

They have dual cards for supporting higher data rates which works quite well.

CFExpress is still barely standardised and there are not as many cards out there yet.

I think CFast is getting to be very solid reliable and affordable. And ultimately the camera works great with CFast as it is...

John certainly has the proof that the UMP12K works well with the current version of the mature CFast2 technology. Time will tell when CFexpress becomes ubiquitous and needed.

Okay, good to hear. I was simply thinking since the full 5:1 12K needs about 900 MB/s that CFExpress would be better suited. Do you think maybe CFast 2.0 will eventually reach those speeds? Or, would it just be better to shoot dual card always for those higher data rates?

I'm not a big fan of attaching a SSD to the back via USB-C as I preview internal recording. It frees things up more. Especially if I'm flying the rig on a Steadicam. So I love using CFast internally currently on the G2.

I know a few companies have 1 TB CFast 2.0 Cards. ProGrade has 512 currently. I have the 256 GB ProGrades, and would probably get 4 1TB drives for the 12K if I to truly commit to recording 12K all the time.

Tim, i just have one Wise CFast2 1 TB card but it has performed flawlessly along with the Wise Dual Recorder (CFast2 and SDXC UHS-II USB-C 3.1 Gen 2). I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another for my gear, but my results need to be verified if they do support UMP12K dual recording at maximum quality.

We were just wondering the same thing!

If type C could theoretically utilise PCIE 4.0 in the future, good lord the speeds with be ridiculous! 8 channels at 1GB each!!!! 8GB is just crazy performance :)

I personally hope they move to CFexpress 2.0 or 3.0 ;)

But I take JB's word as concrete haha

Well maybe, this thread started a year ago and things change. BMD are pretty good at keeping current.

When I read the first post I don't think when I answered I clocked that it was the 12K (g2) theoretical camera ;-)

I wound be surprised if the moved to CFE from this point forward.
