ADATA SE800 + BMPCC4K = No!

I have not seen anyone post this yet, so I thought that I would share. The ADATA SE800 is a next gen SSD that has better performance than the Samsung T7 and a price point that is better than the Samsung T5. What could be better?

I got the drive, hooked it up to my laptop, ran some benchmarks, just shy of 1000 MB/s read and write! Fantastic. I connect it to the BMPCC4K and take it for a test spin. First day, no problems. Second day, I was not paying attention and the camera only recorded 1/2 of my takes. I was running some test shots for an upcoming commercial, so no biggie, but a real issue if I didn't get it corrected. 3rd day, it records a black frame and stops due to dropped frames. I turn off the setting to stop recording on dropped frames and it records. Every frame is black.

After seeing the issues reported for the T7, and this is clearly not on the approved SSD list, I bought a T5. I am testing now. I will report back if there are issues, but the initial test showed it recording.

I just wanted to share my experience incase anyone else was eyeing the SE800. It is too bad really because it is a great drive that perfoms in my benchmarks just as advertised.

Hey, looks like ADATA has posted a firmware update in December for this drive: adata.com/us/download/612
Although it says "Mac OS" it's a Windows EXE file inside. Maybe it's worth a shot to update the SSD & test it out?

Also, in a video by Monkeypixels (youtube.com/watch?v=wRu5bQFHb_g) they recommend flat cables by DockCase as the most stable. Hope that helps!

Can’t comment on SSD but ADATA v90 micro SD card failed me badly on EVO2 Pro drone where AngelBird v60 performed time after time.

I generally stay away from ADATA company after this experience.

SE800 is based on a InnoGrit 5208 (Shasta) which is a PCIe 3.0 x2 DRAM-less SSD controller.

As a general rule, avoid all DRAM-less SSD controllers, as soon as the controller needs to do some background task for the flash, it won't be able to buffer the data flow and that will cause a short write pause, instantly dropping frame and stopping recording.

That's also why the T7 doesn't work, also a DRAM-less SSD controller while the older T5 has 1 Gb of RAM internally to smooth out transfers.

Also the 10G gen2 USB is useless for recording anyway since AFAIK none of the camera support 10G usb3 anyway.

If you want to try other SSD models, to get a chance of it working I would say :
- Make sure the SSD controller has DRAM buffer
- Don't use QLC flash medium
