BMPCC6K recording to SSD (dropping frames)

PostWed Dec 23, 2020 1:27 am

Hello there,
I just got my BMPCC6K and I'm really glad i did.

No matter what i do i cant record without dropping frame rates.

First Drive:
1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus M.2 Nvme drive (3500MB/s read, 3300MB/s write) and a ASUS ROG Strix Arion enclosure.
When i benchmark it using that enclosure in Fedora linux i get about 1000MB/s read and write, when im benchmarking with Blackmagic on my mac i still get around 400MB/s read and write.

Its recording exactly 23 seconds until it drops the frame and stops recording. This drive and enclosure are blazing fast i don't get it.

I ordered an Icy Box IB-1817M-C31 enclosure and i will try it with that tomorrow.

Second Drive:
1TB Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD and a SATA > USB C adapter (equip USB Typ C auf SATA 10Gbps).
Im able to record videos at 50FPS but frames drop and its impossible to play black on my iMac.

Third Drive:
Samsung MicroSD card and SD card adapter. Recording and stops recording at random moments.

Next steps:

I ordered a Samsung T5 1TB drive and will pick it up tomorrow.
I will try the Samsung EVO 970 Plus with the Icy box enclosure.

I got 4x 1TB Samsung EVO 970 Plus M.2 Nvme drives because i want to use them to shoot video and i assumed it would work. Any ways i can get the EVO 970 Plus drives working?
All drives were formatted inside the camera and a high speed USB C cable was used.

Any ideas?

I'm using the T5 500G for any recording codec .
The cable does all the difference.
Buy a fast speed short (needs to be short) usb c to usb c cable

Never assume anything with hardware because it will trip you over ;-)

There is a list of officially recommended drives for the PCC6k:

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59026

Any other combination of enclosures/SSDs will very likely not work because this is a camera which has limited driver support in its firmware compared to a full blown computer setup.

And while it is tempting to use an USB-C device I would strongly recommend in buying a CFast2.0 card - much less of a risk of another point of failure.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thank you for all replies. Yes i assumed and learned from it.
I Got a 2TB T5 from Samsung it and shoots perfectly.
Just sad i cant use the other Nvme Drives or Sata SSD that i have around.
But im excited to get into using my BMPCC6K.

Just out of curiosity i ordered a bunch of enclosures and i will try them all and if i find one that works with the Nvme drives i will report it here.

Did you ever get the chance to test more enclosures with BMPCC6k?

We're using StarTech USB3 eSATAp enclosures (the small 2.5 version, not the big one) with Samsung 850Pro drives. Not Pocket 6K but the 4K and Ursa Mini 4.6K. Works fine.
AMD Ryzen 5800X3D
AMD Radeon 7900XTX
Ursa Mini 4.6K
Pocket 4K
