Disable internal Timecode on URSA G2

PostWed Dec 30, 2020 12:03 pm

Hello everyone,

I'd like to understand how to disable the internal TC generation of a URSA G2.
To give some context:
We run a rig of 3 URSA G2 and one Decimator into 2 Shogun Studio SSD recorders.
We bought the Shogun because they can start recording once they receive a timecode signal.

We generate our timecode as audio via a Rosendahl Timecode generator and run that into a guitar tuner in the recording room.
The idea is that the guitar tuner cuts the signal once it is in use, giving our talent a convenient footswitch to turn on/off recording on all 4 Shogun recorders.

This setup worked very well with BMD Micro Studio cameras and now we wanted to up the quality a bit using URSA G2s.

Problem is that the URSAs seem to constantly send timecode and embed it into the SDI stream which messes up the Shoguns.
They are now constantly recording (in sync), but obviously, never stop recording because we no longer have a way to cut the audio timecode signal.

Any pointers on how to disable timecode generation within URSA G2?

Mathias, there is a solution.
I do have the Shogun Inferno and UM46k + UMP G1 so I know it works.

Tap in the upper left corner
Input >

Change TRIGGER from >>Timecode<< to >>Red Epic<<

Now the Atomos system will honor the REC flag in the SDI stream.

Ursas do not have REC Run timecode like the broadcast cameras. That's the reason. They are always on FREE Run TC.

umm... maybe this didn‘t come through right.
I want the Shogun to trigger by timecode.
But not via the timecode the URSA sends but by the timecode I provide to my 4 shoguns.

To make this a bit clearer: we do not record onto the URSA, they don‘t even have recording media in them.
So noone presses any button on the cameras.

The problem seems to be that the shogun automatically falls back to SDI timecode if the external timecode given to the recorders isn‘t there.
In combination with the URSA always sending timecode this seems to be a ******* situation.
So I need to find either a way to disable timecode generation on the URSA or trigger recording on all 4 shoguns by other means than listening for timecode

Ok, I found this:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=63106

I completely forgot about this, so it seems you can change the timecode behavior

EDIT:
In the latest manual it is described on page 70 - Status LCD Controls

Timecode
Press the ‘timecode’ button to toggle the main timecode display’s format between clip
duration and timecode. By default the timecode will be free running time of day code as
this is the most frequently used. If you press and hold the ‘timecode’ button for five
seconds it will switch the camera into record run timecode and the timecode generator
will flash as well as the first two digits of the large timecode display. This indicates that
you are now editing your preset timecode and allows you to set a specific timecode
number for your preset timecode.
Pressing ‘reset’ at this stage will zero the timecode and then you can turn and press
the menu wheel to set the desired value starting with hours, minutes, seconds and then
frames. When you are happy with the timecode, press and hold the ‘timecode’ button
again for three seconds to set this as your preset timecode point. You will notice that
the timecode generator now shows this value and will only increment when the camera
is recording giving you continuous ascending timecode values. To switch your
timecode back to free running time of day code, press the ‘timecode’ and ‘hold’ buttons
simultaneously for three seconds.

Robert, you are my hero.
I have to admit that I read through the manual part but just holding the button for a few seconds didn't turn the free run off.

Pressing it again once does.
So thank you SO MUCH.

2020 has been a year for heroic deeds and that extends to Robert and everyone who takes the time to be kind to those who need a helping hand. A year from now, everything should be easier, but we shall remember the many kind people in our community that made a difference to us. Wishing you all the best in 2021.
