BMCC and the Sekonic L-308DC

PostThu Oct 03, 2013 3:43 pm

I just purchased the Sekonic L-308DC so I could really get specific with lighting ratios and really refine my craft. Does anyone have any experience using this device with the 2.5k Cinema Camera? I guess what I'm trying to figure out is the whole exposing to the right thing while using a light meter. If anyone has any experience calibrating this thing to be perfect with the BMCC let me know. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have the L308S from my stills shooting days... I'd be interested to learn if you can calibrate it to film as well..

Well so far its working pretty good. I set the ISO to about 400 to get ETTR about right. The 308DC has a Cine mode that works with Shutter angle.

The readings are really really accurate.

I do the same thing, set to 400, camera set to 800, and it works really well.

see my post here for more info on my process

Just wondering, why are you setting the ISO to 400 on the light meter when shooting at ISO 800?

I do it to get a little more into the shadows, and it seems in most well lit scenes there is still enough room for the highlights to land. It just generally gives me a fatter neg compared to exposing straight. And while I will usually print down the shadows, the skin tones generally stay about the same, so they come out cleaner. I just did a lot of testing and found one stop overexposed is where I like it to be in just about every case.

I do it to Expose the highlights to the left. With the Meter at ISO 400, it gives me a higher aperture reading than I would need on a normal DSLR camera. And setting that aperture on my lens puts my image just slightly under clipping with 100% zebras. I still have a lot more testing to decide the best way to expose to the right, but this really seemed to work today when I shot some stuff.

not a big difference.. i set my sekonic at 500, and it feels a little bit overexposed.. but just a bit.. so i´m safe
about lighting ratios i just work as if i were shooting on kodak 5279
ETTR thing can get you to loose a lot of info, get bad shooting habits, and not shoot with a consistent look
all you really need is overexpose "just a little".. as you would do on a film negative
If you have a light metter.. use it.. there are things you will like to overexpose and things you will like to underexpose

I'm wondering if I should go for the L-308DC for £140, the L-478DR for £230 or the L-758Cine DigitalMaster for £350. The L-308DC seems to be the most basic one, but I can't seem to find any comparisons between the L-478D/DR and the L-758?

i would never go for the L-478DR
It has a touch screen, and that means i could accidentally touch something, and change settings..
if you can afford it go for the 758.. cameras change, but a well cared lightmeter is forever
i have a 508 cine but i also carry a L-398A.. analog, no batteries, no worries

Does the L-758 Cine also have the programmable profiles for different cameras and filters etc.?

Yes it does. I got the 308dc and I am really happy with it. Great for ratios.
