URSA Handgrip buttons on 12K

PostMon Feb 15, 2021 9:36 pm

Hi

I have the ursa 12k, and the handgrip, and only the record button works, the other two buttons don’t di anything. I would like one to toggle punch in for focus...

Thanks!

That's not how the handgrip works I'm afraid.

The focus button triggers auto focus on compatible lenses (think EF lenses or PL lenses like Cabrios with active hirose servo control), the iris button triggers auto-iris on compatible lenses and the record button toggles record on/off.

This could be a good time to mention that it's unlikely anyone really uses the auto iris or auto focus buttons. While I can see the appeal in theory, I would guess most operators in practice haven't found them useful. Making them customisable function buttons would be handy.

I agree, I assumed they would be customizable. Maybe in a future update?

Yessss, i want to program my handgrip buttons! Why we can't is just harsh...
I come from an FS5 where I have Zoom Focus magnifier on my handgrip and now its gone. I don't need iris control, I need focus magnification and false colors. Focus and exposure is my job to do manual, not decided by this camera... its a cinemacamera for crying out loud!

The UM Grip is a LANC control device, and can only duplicate LANC functions, which focus punch in and false colors are not LANC controlled functions. Most common LANC commands are focus, iris, zoom, recording start/stop, and Fast Forward/Fast Rewind tape functions, as used on earlier tape based cameras and recorders. LANC is no longer supported by Sony, who developed this control protocol, so newer features were never added. Most newer cameras do not even have a LANC port.
