Solution to SD Card Time-Remaing on PocketCamera

PostFri Oct 04, 2013 5:13 pm

Maybe this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I just noticed it myself last night.

When you play back clips on the pocket camera I noticed the timecode it displays below is a total (in min:sec:frames) of your clips. All I have to do is know that my 32gb card should be changed at 20 mins of footage (it can do about 22 mins). So to check the capacity of the card left, just hit the play button and the timecode is displays of the last clip is basically how much you have shot already. It defaults to the last clip when you hit play anyways, so it's a fairly simple process to see how much your card has left.

The only thing I have not tested is if the camera records consistently even with varying detail or blacks vs. whites in the frame. But I'm assuming it is consistent enough for my needs right now, that I know at 20 minutes I've used about 30 gb.

Also, does anyone know what threshold the camera uses when it starts flashing the "Card full" in red? because it started flashing a few times already, and I can still record several clips even after if has started, and yesterday I had about 1gb left even though it was flashing that. Does anyone know if it starts @ 2gb left, or if it's a percentage of the total card size, etc.

I used that trick as well recently. would be nice if the camera could even just display time-code on it as a counter just pulled from that last clip without having to default into playback mode. Though I find myself going into playback a lot to refresh the HDMI out to the monitor we were using.

This is what we've been doing for the 2.5K.

Also it depends on your cards, but generally it starts to flash when there's about 30 percent left, calculate from there.

I'm having a similar problem with the Card Full message flashing but I'm still able to record. However, on. Sandisk Extreme 128 sdxc card I get only 15 minutes before it starts flashing. Upon loading the card on my laptop it shows I've only used up 20gb. This means I've only used about a sixth of the card before showing Card Full.

Any ideas in why this is occurring?
Thanks!

Why not wait for SD CARD FULL message? That is a low space warning, it's not critical but it's a good point to switch cards. I don't know why so many people are looking for workarounds when a read of the manual would let you know that there is already a low space alert.

My battery and SD card are almost about equal(64gb), when my battery is low I know my space is low. Swap your battery and SD card same time and problem is solved unless you leave the camera on while not recording which isn't smart but people do it.

I agree, I relied on this warning today and it worked out fine. I just ran until the card was full and swapped cards. I think it may have given me 5 minutes of warning on my 128 card. Weird thing is that there is a GB still remaining on card but whatever, big deal.

There are many times when you'll be leaving the camera on for the better part of the day-- such as to feed a director monitor ect. My first shoot out with the pocket we didn't turn it off at all for 11 of the 12 hours of the day (off for lunch). We were on a block battery so we never lost power and worked fine.
As for the time remaining issue, well it's rather important in very many situations-- such as telling a director before a take if we have enough time left on the "mag" at a quick glance as opposed to relying on going into playback mode (and loosing your frame) or guesstimating off of battery usage (which may or may not be heavily impacted by external factors-- haven't yet checked honestly).

What i've done on the bigger brothers-- the cinemas, is have the AC keep a "count-down," running on the camera report, deducting minutes off of the card for the duration of the shot.

A 64GB card is about the same duration as 1 battery pack of constant recording.
(This rule of thumb doesn't work for run&gun where you do short recordings and lots of standby time.)
