Issue with Olympus 100-400mm F5.0-6.3

Hello,

I just got my BMPCC 4K and tried to test a few Olympus lenses I have on it.

With Olympus 100-400mm F5.0-6.3, I could not focus by pressing a focus button on BMPCC.
After switching to MF on a lens, I still could not focus by turning a focus ring.

BTW, I had no problem focusing with Olympus 12-100mm f4.

It would be helpful if anybody could help me with this issue.
Has anyone used this lens on BMPCC 4K before?

I just purchased the same lens and have encountered the same issue. Have you had any luck solving it? It seems like all the electronic lens control isn't working: auto-focus, manual focus and iris. The IS seems to work and the lens does change focus range with the on-lens switch. If anyone has any answers, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if you are still looking for a fix for this lens but I have the same lens and there has just been a post of a beta firmware that addresses this issue.

I just tested this firmware on my pocket 4K and the lens is working as it should.

Hi there, I just got my new 100-400 F5.0-6.3 and I have the same problem. I wanted to know what the solution now is? Still the beta version? Or is there an update of the 100-400 available? I really need this lens for a shoot in two and I really would appreciate any help.

Same solution. The beta from June 15th should work. I don't own this lens myself, but it's what I have read in Kristian Lam's thread about the beta versions. The world has been waiting for a long time now for a camera firmware addressing the tedious issues of version 7.3 with the BMPCC 4k.

I just tested this firmware on my pocket 4K and the lens is working as it should.

can you tell a bit about how this lens performs with the pocket 4k?

And has anybody tried this lens with the MC-20 2x teleconverter?

can we expect that this lens is working alright with the recent firmware of the Pocket 4k?

I’ve got a good offer for that lens, but first I need to make sure if it working.

I use the Olympus 100-400mm with the BMPCC4K and can confirm that both manual and auto focus are working well on it. I haven't tried it with my Olympus X1.4 adapter, but I'm sure it should be fine too, since in the past it worked well. (I have the firmware just previous to the latest 18.1, which I have not updated to yet.)

Yes, the lens stabilisation works really well, in a way very similar to the 12-100mm Oly, which I also have. I haven't had any issues using the MC x1.4 adapter, it just reduces the light a little more. I can't think of any negatives really. Even the higher f stops aren't really very limiting, due to the great low light capability of the BMPCC 4K, plus I usually end up have to put ND filters during daylight anyway. If you have a chance to buy this lens at a good price, go for it, you won't regret it. I bought mine used, but in pristine like new condition, and I'm very happy I bought it. I have a collection of of wide, medium and short telephoto lenses, but this one filled the gap in the long telephoto area beautifully.

Sorry, it was not taken with the P4K, but with my GH5. But I have used it with the P4K to shoot motion picture, and it worked really well. It was just easier to upload this still instead.

Next week I will finally have a tele lens again (my Panasonic 100-300 was lost in a fire accident). I really missed it to film in the long range.

Another question: I have no experience with teleconverters. Would you recommend purchasing one? If yes, the 1.4x or the 2x?

And, could an Olympus teleconverter be used with an anamorphic Sirui lens. like the 75mm Mars? Probably not (macro rings don't work with anamorphics).

When I was doing the info search, prior to buying this lens and converter, I seem to recall some reviewers saying that the 1.4 was sharper than the 2.0. I think the x1.4 would be a safer bet, and brighter too.

No, these adapters can only be used with very specific Olympus lenses since that have a deeper recess at the back end, and the adapter has a projection that fits in there. For example, they will not fit on the Olympus 12-100mm. Too bad about that, but that is the way they are designed, only for a few compatible lenses.

If you do a search on Youtube, there are several really well done reviews talking about using this lens, and well worth the time to check it out.

Just to clarify, yes I have used the MC-X1.4 converter with the Olympus 100-400mm lens, on my BMPCC4K camera, and it works well, (but I have not updated to the last firmware). Yes, I would recommend buying the adapter. Personally, I would go for the X1.4 rather than the X2.0, but, if you have a good deal on the X2.0, sure, why not go for it? You likely just have to be using a little more care when using the X2.0 to get good results.

Where I live, both adapters are a bit on the expensive side right now. I might consider them when they become more affordable.

my first tests were micro photography, because it was raining all day. And in these tests I found that this lens pairs very well with the Nisi diopter. Very good colour rendering, low distortion, and quite deep DOF at f18-22 and additional lighting. The best macro images I've ever got (better than with a once owned specific macro lens). The Nisi diopter is not to compare with single-lens diopters. Because the latter tend to distort geometry and colour, while the Nisi renders clear and sharp images. It's the only diopter for macro I can recommend.

On a sidenote, I had my fright moment when later I was testing normal tele photography. The focus didn't reach infinity. Oh my dear! Until I found the focus switch on the lens.

I purchased this lens to be specifically paired with Micro Cinema cameras and an OG for wildlife filming. As reported in earlier posts, it does not function at all, neither electronically nor manually. I ended up buying an Olympus OM-1 just to be able to at least take stills.

The lens works perfectly on the OM-1 and with Panasonic GH3 & 4. All my other Lumix and M. ZUIKO primes work on the Micros and OG. It is only the M.ZUIKO 100-400mm that does not. Which suggests that the fault possibly lies with M. ZUIKO. But it works with the OM-1 and Panasonics ... !!! ... ?

Posts from BMPCC 4K users are conflicting, with some saying it does not work and others saying it does. But if this 100-400mm zoom works with the other micro 4/3 cameras it would suggest that Blackmagic has not correctly implemented the micro 4/3 code with the Micro and BMPCC OG cameras and maybe also the 4K.

Blackmagic Support blew me off with "we do not offer support for legacy gear" but did say they would pass it on to the developers to investigate if enough people complained.

So, anyone with a Micro Cinema, Micro Studio or Pocket OG who wants to use the best native M4/3 telephoto lens available should harass BM Support and just maybe they will bother to have a look at what they messed up or excluded with their original M4/3 implementation and fix it.

Has anyone tried the Panasonic Lumix 100-400, what were the results?
I have the Lumix version and find it works well but the IS seems to 'wobble' 20% of the time making me very uneasy about trusting this combo as I never know if the footage will be steady or not. I'm using a Pocket 4K with firmware 8.6. The "wobble" looks like micro jitters and is very off-putting and renders the footage unusable.....I'm wondering if the Olympus 100-400 is the better option?
