Best 50mm prime equivalent for Blackmagic Pocket

PostTue Oct 08, 2013 1:06 am

Hi guys, I was just getting ready to place an order for a Zeiss ZF lens and wasn't sure which would be the best choice. I'm wanting to purchase my first prime and wanted to start off with the 50mm equivalent focal length for the bmpcc and wasn't sure which would be the best choice. I'm looking at the Zeiss ZF 28mm f2.0 vs Zeiss ZF 25mm f2.8. They are both around $800 on Ebay. I would be using the speed booster with it. That would make the ZF 28mm f2.0 into 57mm f1.2 and the 25mm f2.8 into 51mm f2.0. I would appreciate some opinions. Thanks!

This for Nikon? I can't find that price range for Zeiss in Nikon mount. All over $1k.
I bought a vintage 24mm 2.0 Nikon with the SB to use with the BMPCC

They are getting pricey and rare.

I have the Panny Leica 25mm F1.4. Requires no adapter. Iris-auto focus work.

And... very light and small. Can't see the point of putting large heavy lenses on the pocket.

Any chance to see a couple of shots of this? Appreciate it.

Switar 25mm I'd go for. Make sure you get the AR version.

I have both the Ziess ZF 25mm w/speed booster, and the Pany/Leica 25mm, both are great lenses, the Leica 25 gives a equiv. 72mm 1.4 long lens, and the Ziess a great standard lens, free of distortion, unlike a 17mm which would be required for 50mm std lens without speed booster. Two different lenses for different situations. Both are great. I also plan to use my Nikon primes, and 11-16 zoom with the speed booster.

In addition to the Pany/Leica 25mm, I have the Pany/Leica 45mm both are great lenses. They are my primary two lenses I use the most. Just got the MB speed booster, and considering a Voightlander 20mm Skopar to use with it, for a small lightweight 14mm (40mm equiv.) to use as my "normal" lens.

The Pan/Leica 25mm f1.4 is my primary lens.
Perfectly sharp even wide open and in the corners.
Focuses in the blink of an eye.

If you are looking for Zeiss glass and are planning on using with a speed booster, the ZF's cost much more than the equivalent C/Y versions. I have an AE 28/2.8 with MBSB that is excellent... That or the MM version will yield you great results on the BMPCC. I paid around $200 for it... usually I see these go for less than $300 at most. Not that the ZFs are bad, but you don't get much more over the C/Y... The Panny 25 is too long for your desired length, if you want modern glass without an adapter, the Oly 17/1.8 is excellent choice that will yield you the 50mm FoV too.

What about the Voigtlander 17.5mm f/.95? Isn't that equivalent to 50 mm on a pocket?

This is a great tool for calculating focal length and AOV between formats http://www.abelcine.com/fov/

S16 is slightly smaller than BMPCC so multiply results X .95 You can compare it to S35, the actual standard or just about any other sensor size.\

Those Zeiss Zf's are really nice lenses. I had the 28.

Visit the official site for Panny lenses - this site has great information for M43 shooters.
