BMPCC NO RAW - WHY?! WHERE?! WHEN?!

I really appreciate what you did for the independent film industry.
and I am eternally glad to own a pocket camera
10-Bit ProRes OTB for 995$ it's really unbelievable!
but this is not exactly what I was paying for




I have just only one question:
WHY HERE

you didn't put HUGE notice what you camera still can't shoot in "RAW Lossles CinemaDNG"
and WHY you didn't say anything on the main page blackmagicdesign.com when we can expect a firmware update. Or maybe you think that it is not necessary?

I was in serious confusion when i open the box with my BMPCC camera and I spent probably 30 minutes of reading manual trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong and why I can not turn on DNG in Recording Format.

Maybe You can give as a public beta version of "RAW" firmware for BMPCC?
I believe many of us can be happy with that.
Also it can be helpful for BM to, we can give a lot of feedback.

It will be fair to give the people a chance to know about this issue before they bought the camera.

No raw was certainly well publicised before the first cameras started to ship. Anyone could drop out and ask for their deposit back.

RAW is in the hands of beta testers as we speak. It's on the way. Soon gentlemen, soon.

BM will not awnser ANY questions regarding firmware. Apparently they feel you don't deserve to know if your camera will ever even be capable of what they might promise.

Current testers are saying that each frame is averaging 2MB a frame. at 30 fps, it'll be 60mbs a second, at the average end.

You'll most definitely have to go with the 95MB sandisk extreme pros.

Guys, it's in the testers hands, that means soon. when exactly, no one will know. but the fact that its out there should be enough to calm ridiculous claims that bmd is intentional trying to screw you.

Do all of us here REALLY need RAW that desperately? I am quite hesitant to even consider that I may use it on paid gigs. Play with it - maybe. But to integrate RAW into my production workflow would require a major overhaul of that said workflow, and a few extra thousands of dollars.

I imagine that most of us who are so impatient for the Pocket Camera to arrive (I do have mine, finally!) and have RAW, aren't probably dealing with clients who are asking for RAW and are willing to pay for it. If you do have those clients, you probably already own the original BMCC, or RED, or whatever, and the Pocket Camera won't make it or break it for you.

RAW is coming, no questions about that. In the meantime, I am blown away by what ProRes can do and I think it's more than I need.

I think the delay is due to the unified firmware strategy they're trying to implement. They probably don't want to release anything until the 4k camera is out, so as not to have 1000049949 different firmware versions/updates

Yeah, also not in mine. But the Pocket was awesome on my trip to Japan! If only I wasn't so shaky while shooting...

This is good news. I am not in a big hurry for raw on my pocket cam, but I would like to know if compressed raw will be available in the BMCC, that would be very useful.

Printing that it has RAW on the package when it doesn't should be a punishable offense, if it isn't already.

Just be happy that RAW will come...unlike these examples of reputable companies such as Apple, Nokia and Coca Cola making completely baseless claims of features their product is 100% incapable of ever performing.

Can any SD cards actually write that fast though? Usually the nominal speed on the card is the read speed, the write speed is a lot lower.

Let's see it that way: it's only been two months since the first Pocket cams were shipped - even if it feels a lot longer, probably due to the long wait for the camera itself before. They said that raw would come later through a firmware update, and now they are close to delivering said update. Nothing to be angry about.

They might be planning to do it after shipping, but in that case the claim should not have been printed on the box. They could always modify the box after implementing it. The average person buying these cameras are probably not following these boards on a frequent basis - they would only come to the web site when there was a problem, and finding out that there isn't actually RAW would take digging on their part.

In any case, if a manufacturer prints a claim of a feature on the box, a buyer should have a reasonable expectation that the item in the box actually supports that feature. It is also reasonable for the buyer to get upset when they find out through trial and error that it doesn't. That is why most reputable companies don't do it.

IMO what happened is that the box is another example of a lapse of QC in BM's production. The boxes should never have been used to ship product out in. It almost seems as if they don't have a QC department, or if they do, they should get a new one.

Maybe they were to busy working on raw to change the box. It looks like it is close to ready and will be a wonderful bonus in my opinion.

By the time people can actually see the boxes (on shelves) before buying, the printed promise might already hold true. Right now all cameras sold were either preordered long before the boxes were even printed, or at least bought after gathering information on the internet. You'll be hard pressed to find one single person that walked into some store, read the box (and only the box) and decided "hey, cool camera, i think i'll buy one".

Reality is, 99% of BMPC users don't care about any of this. They are happily using the camera, and eagerly awaiting raw - soon to come.
A few disgruntled people have started multipole threads on this forum, using highly emotive language like "lies'.

I want raw, I own a BMCC, I bought the BMPC hoping for raw fast, now as far are whats printed on the box, there should be a sticker over raw, come to the east coast, you can buy these in stores today

NOOOOO I dont agree with you at all. BM must tell at anytime RAW was not in the cam and precise when the firmware will be ready.

Their customer service isn't exactly impressive, but their advertising is only bogus if they don't deliver raw on the pocket at all. Late isn't the same as never.

I'm hoping that they'll give us raw soon also, but it's not going to stop me from shooting with it in the meantime. And as most of us have already realized, even in ProRes, the image quality we're getting from these cameras is incredible. Everyone that I've been shooing for lately has been very happy with the footage (except for the one dolt who didn't understand the concept of color grading), and it's all been ProRes.

Actually it's the other way round: you are unhappy because you bought a camera that does not yet do what you expeceted it to do - but it's your fault when you didn't read one single review of the camera, and just went with what was printed onto a box (which i am sure you had _not_ seen before you ordered the camera...).

I am not unhappy at all. I am using my cam in Prores. And I am HAPPY !
But your argument is invalid for me: as I pre order this cam, like a lot of people on this forum, NO review at that time was pointing the non-raw delivery...
When I red all the reviews , I was not enough strong to cancel and wait (let me think, did I say "wait") ? Oh yeah but - and that's the point - HOW LONG would I wait ????
The one and only problem about RAW with this cam is JUST the fact that BM stayed SILENT until someone started to complain about this non commercial attitude.
