New Camera Update

PostTue Apr 27, 2021 5:17 am

The new camera update has an issue (using Mac). When you open the APP it can see the camera and says it needs an update. When you start the update it try's to start but stops and says there is a bad connection.

To get the camera to work again you have to remove the power and re-start it. I have tried different ports, cables and checked the cables work with my SSD.

I have tried this four times, exactly the same results each time.

This is the first time a Blackmagic update has not worked.

I was able to update a P4k, P6K & P6K Pro on my mac, although with the 6K Pro it always says "update failed" even though it udates it.

Good to see you checked cables. There are mysteries with cables though, and if you’ve checked connections are secure, perhaps ensured that the USB-C connection is from the computer controller (not a hub), the update may work today.

That comment is logical, but I’ve had mysterious behaviour where expensive bad cables are suddenly good again so that’s why this post may appear to be misguided ravings from a lunatic.

I have tried three Macs and multiple cables and am still unable to update my Pocket 4K. It fails every time. I had previously been unable to update, so my camera is still on 6.1. I wonder if there’s a way for me to incrementally update to a version that fixes this problem?

Not sure if it's of any help but I specifically used a USB 2.0 USB-C cable (no superspeed lanes), if you've only tried usb 3.0 cables, you might try that.

I made the updated on a crappy celeron machine from 10y ago (the only machine I have that runs windows since I'm a linux guy) and it worked fine.

OK, new cable, different computer, now on mains power - not external battery, new download and all is good. Worked. So I'm thinking it was mains power or was it. Thank you all for the comments.

I believe it’s recommended to update while the camera is on mains power. Glad the new cable worked well.

I usually update with a full battery-- no risk of a power outage.

I've updated my P4K running on fully charged battery only, connected via USB hub to a M1 Mac :) Sounds like an imminent disaster but no issues at all. The only thing I've noticed is that I've used the charging cable from the RØDE Wireless Go, which I believe is usb 2.0...

I agree updating with a fully charged internal battery should also be fine. So not a requirement, just a recommendation.

I always have the camera plugged in when I attempt, and am getting pretty frustrated by the mysteriousness of it all. I do have an M1 Air I can try next. I guess I’ll just keep mixing and matching computers and cables until I succeed. But this is a terrible experience.

Wasn't there some USB-C/Thunderbolt security setting in OS-X preventing some devices from being recognized? You would have to explicitly allow access for the device driver or so?

Would not surprise me if that was the case in Catalina or later, but there’s nothing in System Preferences asking me to give permissions.

You could try the recovery process :

- Open the camera update software on computer
- Camera Off
- Connect camera to the computer
- Power the camera on whilst holding the autofocus button (second from the top next to the LCD).
- The camera will enter recovery mode and should be detected by the update software

After a kind and helpful call with support, it seems there may be an issue with the 7.3 update as pertains to the Pocket 4K. The agent suggested I try updating to 6.9.6, which did work. He advised to be on the lookout for a dot-update to the 7.3 update.

BTW I was able to update to 7.3 after running the 6.9.6 updater.
