Differences in Target Market for BMCC and BMPC 4k? [newbie]

Hi,

I am pretty new to the products of BM. I heard a lot of and have seen a lot of things about it, but I never owned one by my own.

What I am wondering is the naming of the cameras:
  • Black Magic Cinema Camera
  • Black Magic Production Camera

Is the Production Camera not aimed for a Cinematographer? The Specs (higher resolution, global shutter, sensor size) looks very interesting and should be especially for a Cinematographer interesting?

Thanks

What does this matter?

I call myself a professional after 14 full length movies and I only care about the image my audience sees.

Camera is just part of the tools I use - my brain being the most important!

Don't get hung up on cameras.....

His question about the cameras are right.
Some say that due to the lower dynamic range with the 4k camera it is not cinematic, but good for comercial shots and other studio work.

Dont be fooled by the name. It is indeed a cinema camera. Saying the camera is not cinematic because it "only" has 12 stops of DR is insane. That's not aimed at anyone in particular, but I've heard it many times now in the past few months.

The early digital cinema cameras didn't have that much DR, nor did they have a Super35 sensor. Everyone has their own opinions on the matter. It's up to each individual user to decide which camera will work for what they need based upon the specs and what it is capable of.

Hi,

thanks for you response. My first worry was, it might look less cinematic and more TV'ish (more like a traditional camcorder). And you couldn't even criticize BM, because they never said it is a cinematic camera.

So, now we just have wait for the camera to compare the pictures ;)

I agree with everyone here. Camera is just a tool. There have been great movies made with camcorders (look at Dogma's films). Not that I would do my movies with a camcorder since I am a person that focuses much on aesthetics, but the camera alone doesn't make the movie, that's for sure.

With appropriate lighting you can do wonders with a 7D, which has what, 8 stops of DR? :)

The difference is really based on need. Even in the same market different productions have different needs. That's why a DP may use one camera on one feature film and a different camera on another.

4K camera obviously provides 4K "future proofing" so it has some value if you think your indie feature or doc might have that kind of longevity. It also has global shutter rather than rolling if that's important to your given production. Also the s35ish sensor size will help with shallow DOF

BMCC might be a choice if you think your shooting environments will benefit from the bit of extra dynamic range. s16ish size might help if you actually don't want to fight sDOF. You might also find having an MFT mount option helpful depending on your lens needs.

Also given the price you can get two BMCC for the price of one 4k and that might be important if regularly use two cameras to shoot your productions.

I find the BMDCC is a very good camera. Excellent for doc and portrait
