Is the Lumix 20mm glitchy with the BMPCC?

PostSat Oct 19, 2013 9:03 pm

Hello All,
Finally got back my camera from BM UK support center...apparently it didn't need calibration after all. Round trip took 48hours...BM Support is really really good..at least from my experience with them in the UK.

Anyway, was out shooting today around London and only had my Lumix 20mm. I'm not sure what's going on and I know the lens is not on their official list, but every time I try to auto-focus or manual focus with this lens especially over a long range, the lens sometimes just "resets" the aperture and I can't even control it using the buttons for a couple of seconds...it's like it crashes or something and it seems like the communication between the lens and body drops for a fraction of a second. Sometimes I would see the "--" instead of the F number on the screen while that's happening...sometimes it just defaults to F 16 although the lens is wide open during the crash.

Any one else experiencing the same problem? Unfortunately I won't have any of my other Lumix lenses until I get back home from the UK so I won't know if the problem is lens specific or with the camera :(

Oh and I was very careful not to press the lens release button during manual focus since it also resets the lens so that was not the problem

Hmm. Hasn't been an issue for me on my 20mm/BMPCC. I've had the camera a couple weeks and shot with it a number of times without the 20 doing anything weird.

It seems there is a problem with the version II, the new one:

I have the same thing. I have seen others report this too. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

I have a new Lumix 20mm II and I too am experiencing the same glitch and occasional odd behavior on the pocket cinema camera. A fast pull of the focus causes the lens to open wide. I too need a solution.

To clarify my experience: if I pull the foces "fast" the lens auto resets the focus to infinity. Whats odd is that this behavior happened often tonight in a low light indoor shot.. but earlier today I was shooting in brighter conditions and it didn't happen at all. I'm very frustrated. It's a beautiful and very sharp but it has a mind of its own. I hate to have to sell it.

Unfortunately, I confirmed today that the firmware on my new Model H-H020 Lumix 20mm f1.7 II ASPH is indeed ver 1.1 which I believe to be dated from 2009. Same version as the older lens. I believe. There is no newer firmware for this lens available.

My only recourse is to wait for BM to update the firmware on the Pocket Cinema to support this lens, or sell the lens.

What I have learned from this: when shopping for a "smart" MFT lens to use with the Pocket, if the lens is not on the approved list, be sure to test it prior to buying.

Where can we find the official list of supported lenses ? I'd like to know if the olympus 12mm f/2.0 is on it.

It's on the FAQ on the support page for the BMPCC on blackmagicdesign.com

I can't see the Olympus 12mm f/2.0. on the list. Hopefully someone tests it on the BMPCC at some point.

Keep in mind that this strange behavior of the Lumix seems to be related to the dynamic range/exposure settings of the Camera and don't always occur. I was trying to replicate the the problem yesterday night in low light and no matter what I did it wouldn't do it...today in the morning first few seconds and boom...reset/glitch

Similar issues with the Lumix 20mm version 1. I've used both the Panasonic 14-42 and Olympus 17mm, both supported, with no problems. A BM tech said she tried the 20mm and said it worked fine. Very frustrating. We just need a firmware update posthaste. Love the image quality, but a lot of bugs with this camera so far.

Here's a thread I started, which might provide some info.
