camera internal mic hum

I don't often use the internal mics on the G2 camera but when out shooting B-roll today I had both internal mics set at 60% and in reviewing the clips there is a lot of hum - not wind noise - just hum. In FCPX the normal hum removal has little effect. I do not expect great sound and it does not sound like fan noise but .... I would like a little cleaner sound. Am I expecting too much?

50% means no gain applied, so 60% means you have applied gain which is going to raise the noise floor. The internal mics are likely going to pickup some fan noise. Not an issue if it’s intended for scratch audio, but could be problematic without sweetening in post as your sole audio.

iZotope RX8 will do wonders at getting that hum out. Yes, best to avoid hum and other stuff when recording... but we all know (or should know) perfect recordings are a skilled art. Thanks Rick for that tip on 50%. I had not realized that, but is where I set I with the Rode video NTG. I also pick up extra sounds from the Nucleus-Ms, touching the camera, walking in gravel while shooting, breathing, those pesky bird-watchers way over there talking and clicking... But then it can be more interesting with some (the right amount) of ambiance. Also why I have the Rode stereo mic recording to a mixpre-6 timecode synced. Even the mics add their own. iZotope RX is nice although it dose cost a bit.

The hum as noticible but I found I could get rid of 90% by going to the FCPX equalizer panel and pulling down the bass on the 3 bottom end channels. Works for background sound at least.

Google "parametric equalizer sweep" for youtube examples of how to cut specific hum frequencies. It's a very effective way to reduce consistent noises in audio.

Thanks Ric - will do - though I had hopes there would be no hum. I did try recording at 50% and that did not help much at all.
