This is not totally correct. John has explained this above succinctly. The UK slating style are pretty much being adopted in many US productions as well. Hollywood is not the only source of movies like it was in the past.

This has been asked numerous times in the past to no avail. So for now, using the scene.shot convention is it. I wish they would let you choose either of the slating style.
