Monitoring 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio on Atomos Shinobi

PostFri Jun 18, 2021 7:54 pm

Could anyone let me know if there's a way to set up a 1.66:1 (Super 16) frame guide on the Atomos Shinobi? (for the Pocket 4K in DCI mode) It's not an option when tapping through the actual frame guides, but when I tap the "safe area" icon, it brings up two yellow frame lines on either side that seem to match a 1.66 ratio quite well. I'm not sure if it's exactly correct, though.

The best you can probably do is calculate how much you're losing on either side of the screen with 1.66 (which would be about 15:9) and see how closely the safe area matches it (by coincidence).

But you do know that S16mm was never (or almost never) projected as 1.66? You can't make a S16mm release print (no room for optical sound), and the blowups were standard 1.85 35mm, top and bottom of the S16mm cropped. There is an actual 1.66 aspect ratio (for 35mm), but it's rarely used these days.
