(DOF) Depth of field on BMC

PostTue Oct 02, 2012 7:12 am

Because Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF adjust iris automatically, you can`t be sure how much DOF your getting..

So, any solution? and i have a question, ROKINON and SAMYANG CINE LENSES have a manual Iris control, so i would like to know if you can adjust DOF manually whit this lenses on your BMC? I Hope you can help and give me some Tips to control DOF.. Thanks :D

on manual lense you leave iris wide open and get your dof.

important is to have good balance so you do not over expose or under expose.

one would need some nd filters etc.

Thanks. Is nice to know you can get prime lenses with manual iris.. at that price!! So for example how bmc adjust iris, if you'r working with a canon 17-40 you just adjust iris by steps without knowing whats your aperture?

But how do you know what your iris is set to with an EF lens?

You'd have to stop all the way down, then count how many times you pressed the button to get to correct exposure and figure out what stop you ended up on. Not ideal, but certainly doable. Though a readout on the screen of what F stop you're at would still be my number 1 feature request.

You're not locked into using the auto iris, you can easily turn it off and go manual. As of yet, there's no f-stop reading on the camera (which, I'm sure they'll fix with one of their first firmware updates). A quick fix for now would be to put it on a dslr, set your f-stop, and then put it back on the camera. By the time you get your camera, I'm sure Black Magic will have sorted this out with a firmware update.
And as for knowing exactly how much DOF you're getting, a DOF calculator (available on the Kodak Cinema Tools app on your iPhone) would be perfect.

Hi Marc: On the subject of repeating oneself over and over (I know, I do it too!), if you haven't already seen it, I'm reminded by what happens to the skipping phonograph in the first minute or so in this great animation by Nina Paley:

Not that I'd wish a similar fate would befall us "repeaters". ;-)

P.S.: I'm hoping BMD has included an aperture value display on the LCD in the alleged forthcoming firmware update ... fingers crossed. And yes, it is humorous (or sad) that a BMCC fanboy like me has to use words like "alleged" in his posts, but here we are. ;-)

To open your iris.. Use the arrow controls to open the aperture until it stops.. then it's all the way open.. then I would recommend a fader/variable ND filter to adjust your exposure. (or use shutter/ISO)

Xei xei...good eye. I was there for a week last month on business and had a day to play tourist. That's the back door of the Forbidden City in Beijing. I felt like a total celebrity. It's an incredible place and the people are wonderful. 8-)
