BMPCC 4K Blocking Issue

PostMon Aug 02, 2021 4:24 pm

Hey

Has anyone else had this problem before with the BMPCC 4k?

I have a static shot, filmed in BRAW 12:1, and there are horrible blocking artifacts throughout the entire video. I have checked to see if this is a Resolve issue, but playing back on the camera and zooming in displays the same issue. It doesn't look like compression macro blocking as the squares don't seem to move, and annoyingly only seem to be visible in the parts of the image that are most important! All other shots from the day on this camera and another BMPCC 4K don't seem to have the issue, just this one shot that was the all important fixed backup shot at a ceremony, where I was hoping to be able to crop in a bit when needed, but there is no chance of that now.

Is there any fix for this? Or is it fully baked into the footage and there's no way of removing it? I have tried different scaling options in Resolve, noise reduction which just seems to make the blocks more noticeable.
Running out of options!

See attached.

You might have a look at TopazLabs Video Enhancer AI - which is able to remove blocking artifacts and more.

If you are unsure you can render out a 10 sec part of the video (Cineform or DNxHD) and upload it to me and I'll put it through Video Enhancer AI so you can see if it is able to help.

Upload the sample here:

Could you also upload a single frame BRAW of that problematic part:

Just go to the raw tab and click the "export frame" button. This will give you a signle braw frame.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Looks underexposed. How were you evaluating exposure? False color or histogram? Cinema cameras need lot's of light on the sensor, and you cannot cheat. Noise of some type is the usual result.
Creativity is the ability to accept ambiguity.
