Is BMPP 6K, or 6K Pro, good enough to make Netflix content?

PostSun Aug 01, 2021 12:54 pm

Hello: (I have posted this twice. Not sure why it doesn't make it on our forum):
I don't see the 6K on the "official" list for approved cameras for docs or films accepted by Netflix. Unless they are just picking on people with a small budget, why would this be? By what justification?
Anybody here have any experience with delivery, and dealing with these lists? Are they hard and fast laws? Are the lists really just suggestions?
We are hoping to make a documentary and don't want any doors to be closed just because we shot on cameras not approved by PBS or content providers.

thanks

You will find this subject discussed extensively and sometimes angrily over several different threads.

Unless you're under contract with Netflix to produce material for them, there are no, repeat no, camera requirements for third-party material they purchase. Netflix may (or may not) take production value into account when selecting material to license for broadcast, but they are not going to accept or reject material based on the camera you used.

The Netflix thing just seems to be a status or street cred issue for most people. If you’re making content commissioned by Netflix there is almost zero chance you’d be making it on a Blackmagic pocket anyway so don’t stress.

There are 1000 reasons why they would or wouldn’t buy your content that have little to do with what camera it was shot on. Go shoot great content and if you know what you’re doing with a Pocket cam it will look incredible.

Thanks Ian and John for sharing your expertise!
Sounds like those lists are for contracted projects. Something that is way outside of my orbit.
thanks again!
