SDI Output whith FILM dynamic range selected

PostWed Oct 30, 2013 5:47 pm

Hey there!

While filming with my new BMCC i realized that the camera does only output a "processed" picture over SDI when the video look is selected in the recording options. When i choose the film dynamic range for recording, the output switches to film look automatically. I find it difficult to judge the picture on my SDI monitor when it's so grey and flat. What is your advice on monitoring? I'd really like to shoot with the film dynamic range and monitor with a processed image... The monitor I'm using is a Ikan d5.

Best regards
Lou

Me too! I think this is supposed to be a feature of the firmware, but it's not working yet.
MacOS Catalina Version 10.15.7
iMac Pro (2017)
3 GHz Intel Xeon W
64GB 2666 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB

I believe this has been discussed elsewhere so a Search may help. The gist of the solution is that you need to insert a Rec.709 LUT between the SDI feed and what your monitor displays. Flanders Scientific has some fairly expensive monitors that include a LUT for the Blackmagic camera SDI feed such as the CM171. A less expensive option uses a BMD HD Link I think in which you can load a LUT (sorry, but please help me out here folks as I haven’t the time to look this up tonight).

Another, far less ideal solution, is to fiddle with the contrast and sat of your monitor-- basically maxing it out-- to get an image. Had same problem on feature recently-- solution was upping the sat/contrast on the monitor just to get it viewable-- but not trusting it for any exposure/critical choices obviously.
