Black Magic Cinema 4K weird zoom

PostFri Aug 13, 2021 6:12 pm

So I bought a brand new Black Magic cinema 4K camera recently and to it I bought a Lumix vario G 35-100mm lens. But it seems like it is too zoomed in. I don't know the best way to test my lens zoom in the best way but When the lens is set on 35mm I have to be 120 cm away to see my al edges on my 27 inch screen. the screen in 60 cm wide.

Is this normal for a 35mm lens or is the something that is weaird? If it is weaird how can I fix it?

Are you recording with windowed mode? Or you recording raw a resolution under 4K?
If you think that is too much zoomed could be that camera using only part of sensor.

Assuming you are talking about the Pocket Cinema 4K, that behavior seems correct. Here is the result from a lens calculator.

The sensor size is 19x10 mm that makes things look cropped if you're used to bigger sensor photo cameras. The solution is to get a wider lens. Compared to a "full frame" photo camera you can roughly calculate the lens crop by multiplying *2, for example a 35-100 looks on a Pocket 4K about the same as a 70-200 looks on a Nikon Z6.

You might also find it helpful to use the 3D Lens Calculator https://www.jvsg.com/calculators/cctv-lens-calculator/ . This tool lets you compare the field of view you're currently getting with what you should expect. You can input your camera's sensor size and lens focal length, and it will provide the expected field of view. Remember, different cameras and lenses produce varying results, so understanding your gear's specifications is essential.

Due to the smaller sensor size on the BMPCC4K compared to 135 film, you probably would prefer to use a wider angle lens. One option I use which may suit your needs would be the Tokina Cinema ATX 11-20mm T2.9 zoom, but there are several alternatives available including even wider rectilinear primes from Laowa.
