.braw not finalized and won’t play

PostFri Aug 27, 2021 6:06 am

Hi, I have a braw file that didn’t get finalized because the camera power got turned off. The strange thing is I was able to recover the audio through VLC player but not the video. Support told me to ask the forum and said If you are able to locate an application that can write headers on files, then you can copy the header info of another movie file that is the same resolution, codec, frame rate and similar in length.

Does anyone know how to fix this braw file? Or know of a Mac app that can write headers on files? I’ve been searching for days. Thanks for your time!

Thank you, I forgot to mention I have no money and in my opinion there service is way too expensive. And really the question is why does black magic not have this technology or haven’t implemented a way to do this.

How do you know their service is way too expensive? Have you got a quote from them?

Because Blackmagic is not in the file recovery business. Implementing such a thing takes time, money and knowledgeable engineers.

What Blackmagic has implemented is that the camera constantly finishes writing to media every few seconds. In 8 years with 4 different Blackmagic cameras I have never lost a file (or got an unreadable one) after a power loss.

So the question is, did you maybe cheap-out on your recording media?

Are you sure it’s not finalised ?

As far as I understand, the camera finals the file every few seconds. The most you would loose from a power outage is a few seconds. I regularly test all my cameras when starting on a new show for this by recording on a slate, counting down to a power outage and pulling the power.

It would be the first time I’ve heard of a file not being finalised. If there is sound and only a few seconds of audio it might just be a very short clip ?

What’s the file size of the clip ? What setting were you recording ?

Hi, thank you for your responses. The file is about 85gb and like I mentioned I was able to pull off the audio for the whole length in VLC player. It was recorded on a Samsung t5 1gb and I’ve never had issues before. All I know is I came back to it and it was off. I assumed the ac power got turned off while recording.
I did see a preview of the camera in the aero quartet app but I am broke. I read on a forum that it was about 100 per file to fix :/

Anyone else got a fix?

Thanks

Also, the .braw file preview pic on my Mac finder looks more like a .sidecar file and doesn’t have a preview like the other .braw files.

Yes and they told me to come here and post on the forum.

And I just got a quote from the aero quartet. $139 for 34min of video :/
