BM Approved Exascend SSD not recognized by URSA 12k

PostThu Sep 02, 2021 11:15 am

Hi there,

Have a 12k and bought the 12k ssd recorder and approved Exascend 960GB SSD model: EXP3M4C960GV1U2CEE and the camera does not see it. I have attached a cable from the ssd recorder to my laptop and the computer sees it and I have been able to format either exfat, ntfs or Mac (Pc laptop with MacDrive installed)

No matter what format, once the ssd recorder is hooked back up to the camera, the camera does not see it. I have also tried a different cable as well. Other older Samsung SSD’s (850 Pro) work no problem.

I am up to date on all firmware for the camera and ssd recorder.

Anyone else having issues?

May be that producer change controller without notice. Happened in past with crucial, same ssd, same code, different controller, first recognised from Bmcc and Bmpc4k second never seen

If that’s the case I like spending over $500 CAD for something that is now unusable :(

Ask to Exascend if there is a changment on controller of that ssd (crucial admit only after few months the changment, initially try to avoid to answer), but i had both version of ssd and same code :o

Sent them a message. I’ll wait for their reply before calling BM support.

Exascend has been great and are in the process of getting a 12k and ssd recorder to duplicate the problem and rewrite the firmware as the last BM updates caused a break with their certified drives.

So Exascend have been great and are sending an updated drive immediately. I have to send mine to their office in California but they are sending the replacement without needing mine back before they send out the new one. Anyways here’s what they said:

“We found the recognition problem is caused by insufficient power supply from URSA Mini Pro 12K.

We did several cross test and found latest URSA recorder firmware (FW7.4.1) decrease power voltage to SSD when connecting with URSA Mini Pro 12K and the restricted power voltage is less than industrial standard. When power management IC detects insufficient power voltage, the SSD won’t be active to prevent data loss.
The restriction instruction comes from camera (via Type-C connector), that’s why the detective problem only happens when recorder connects to the camera, but SSD works normal when connecting to the laptop.

We’ll update the power management IC firmware to ensure the SSD could still be active even detects low power voltage from Mini Pro 12K. At the same time we’ll raise the issue to Blackmagic Design since the restricted power voltage do not fit industrial standard.”
